We have the same problem over here. DS sleeps great at night in his crib, no fussing, only waking up once during the night and goes right back down. But during the day he refuses naps in general and hates his crib.

We've been nap training in the crib and I've found it's more of an art than a science. You have to wait until LO is visibly tired (the clock will also help determine when sleep should occur) and get him in the crib before he falls asleep. My DS will almost always fuss/cry when I put him in the crib, but within 5 minutes he's out. Teh challenge is getting him to take long enough naps. If it hasn't been long enough when he wakes up we try to just leave him, but if his cries start escalating we'll rescue him and let him stay up. I'm hoping that over time he gets used to napping in the crib and doesn't see it as such a negative thing.

@char54: So, our LO never really slept in a swing and he never nursed or bottle fed to sleep. We always did a wake to feed. The biggest hurdle was rocking to sleep...total nightmare. We did cold turkey CIO at night at 4 months and then naps at 10 months.

@char54: C is a good sleeper though, so I don't think you would be too affected by the regression--fingers crossed! I'd honestly bite the bullet and do it now--well, tomorrow! We started with the first nap of the day and did each the same including bedtime so we were consistent.

@Rubies: I like that idea - putting her down while heavy eyed. I think part of the problem is that she wakes up after I put her down asleep and can't get herself back to sleep. I don't mind letting her cry it out either. Maybe I'll try that at night time since her bedtime sleep routine is much easier than naps at this point.

@illumina: I read that too (about. 2.5-4mo) and wondering if I missed the boat and should just wait until the next opportunity.

@rubies: says it well :) fortunately S never got past whining when we let her "CIO" and the whining only lasted for 1 day, but if we had to we decided we were ok with letting her CIO at that age because her naps were getting worse/non-existent when I had to hold her and she was just miserable and tired all day. To me, I felt like that was more harsh on her than teaching her to get proper rest with CIO for naps.

@2PeasinaPod: that's what I'm thinking... Which bad habit would you try to fix first - naps in swing, or rock&feed to sleep?

@jetsa: I hear you .. At this point I'm like "whatever works!!"...she so little and looks so tired I just want to help her sleep.

-proof of my nap training failure... There's a reason her daddy calls her "Charlie in charge" :-)

I read in one of the articles on the Bee that between 2.5-4mths is a good time to train as there is nothing major going on yet so sleep is generally "good". For us nursing and rocking stopped working at 4 and 6wks respectively so I was basically holding her for a lot of her naps until 3mths when we "trained". I say trained lightly because she could suck her thumb so we basically just gave her the opportunity to learn to soothe to sleep by not going in whenever she started to fuss. I'm not sure how it works with a pacifier that can fall out though until they get old enough to put it back in. If she naps fine in the swing, I would say leave it at that until she is ready to soothe herself in the crib during the day.

D2 turns 3 months old this week and I've already (sort of) started nap-training. From 0-2 months I didn't care if I rocked her to sleep and just held her in my arms for naps but for the last month I really wanted to establish good sleeping habits so I started going hardcore with a nap routine. At the first sign of tiredness, I'll put her in her sleep sack and carry her around in my arms and soothe her just until she's totally heavy-eyed and sleepy (but NOT asleep). I'll put her down in her crib and she'll immediately flinch and fuss or cry. I just leave her room and the longest I've let her CIO is 10 minutes. Four out of five times, she'll fall asleep within the 10 minutes. If she's still upset after 10, I will pick her up and soothe her and repeat the whole process. I've never had to go back in twice.

The thing is, though, is that I'm comfortable with crying it out and some people are not. BUT, yeah, I do think nap-training now is better than later.

My only advice is that I think it would be better to start now than to wait. We waited until 10 months and it was pure torture!!

@char54: We have failed up until this point to get any kind of nap and then all of a sudden he'll go down if we rock him. I have no idea why, but it works for now. He's gets so overtired but I can't make him sleep. Also I feed to sleep at night and rock during the day so I just figure I'll have to break them at some point but right now I'm just doing what works.

@jetsa: I gave up once she started screaming. as soon as I picked her up she started burping :-( I felt awful . She wasn't even consolable when I held her and rocked her .

Her eyes are so heavy and she is so overtired. I put her in her swing (I'm a nap train fail!) so she can try to get some sleep.

I don't know if I should try again tomorrow or just wait until she is a bit older. Sounds like from your thread I should wait a bit! I just worry that our bad habits (swing naps, rock/feed to sleep) will get harder to break as she gets older

No advice. =/

I asked a similar question and most people said 5-6 months was the earliest to nap train.

A little background: LO is 4 months old and has been STTN really well (10pm-9am) in her crib since she was a month old.

She will not, however, take a nap in her crib. She will nap great (1.5-2 hours) in her swing, but when I put her down asleep (I know, that's my first mistake) in her crib, she wakes up after 15 minutes, happily kicks for 15 minutes then starts fussing.

I've started letting her fuss/cry and going in every 10 minutes or so to rub her belly and put her soother back in. She smiles immediately once she sees me and stops crying. I've been doing this for the past hour and she is showing no signs of going back to sleep.

At what point do I call it quits for the day and pick her up to try again tomorrow? Am I screwing things up if I let her sleep in her swing today (I'm worried about her getting over tired)? Am I crazy to be nap training at 4 months when a sleep regression might be right around the corner??

HELP!!
