@Penny Lane: 28 min., 39 min., 33 min. Pretty pathetic right? I tried letting her get through the wakings, but she just got more riled up, so I'd finally go get her after 5 min. of escalating cries. Glad to know I have company in the the late-birds. :) Thanks for the 2 nap schedule. My goal is to get good naps and then condense to 2!

@SugarplumsMom: Thanks. Ah! Is it bad I feel better knowing there are others who have similar situations? :/ You're right. She gets more riled up and harder to calm down. That's why DH can never get her to nap or sleep once she's worked up. When she's really going nuts, if I bring her out into the light and living room, she instantly calms down.

P.S. She still does this now. She's been up since 4:30 this morning and has fought going back to sleep. She's apparently up for the day and I'm downing coffee.

I've noticed with my DD, the more riled up she gets, the harder it is for her to calm down. So especially when she was younger, we'd have to play with her to distract her (opposite of what the sleep books advise) and once she's calmer, we'd try again and it usually worked. But if we let her get riled up, it would be all day hair pulling (as in my own hair). Lol.

:( I wish I had some advice for you. It seems your DD and mine have the same temperament when it comes to sleep. We hardly went out when she was younger. I know that if I kept at it, she would have eventually given up, but her will was stronger than ours (especially since 1 day of not napping meant soooo much pain for days since it screwed with her sleep schedule).

Looking back now, I think I would have just tried to walk away. As in if she hasn't napped for hours and I know she's tired, just put her in the crib and walk away and hope she doesn't do the coughing choking thing because I'd totally cave too.

Hugs. I hope it's just a phase and this is the tail end of it!

@shopaholic: were her naps any longer with this schedule? I think the key for us was with the longer awake times, he was tired enough to get through that first waking in his naps, making them longer than that dreaded 30 min, KWIM?

I have a late to sleep and late awake baby too (8:30 - 8/8:30), and we do our 2 naps now at 11 and 3, and that still works really well for us at 14 months!

@Penny Lane: @NovBaby1112: Thanks. I tried it today. She was really fussy near the 2 hour mark. I managed to get 2.5-2.5-3.5 and had to start bedtime earlier because she was just melting.

She normally wakes up 9-9:30 am and bedtime starts 9 (or earlier lately). I guess I would eventually aim for 1 and 5?

I agree with others that longer awake times might help. I know you said she has long awake times in general from fighting the nap so much, but I think that if you had set nap times and a set nap routine, it would help with her nap troubles. Really wear her out before her naps, take her outside, play, let her crawl around, etc. what time does she wake up in the morning? I agree with the 2-3-4 schedule, or even 2-3-3 if she can't do 4 hours yet. Good nap times are around 9 and 1 or 2. Do the exact same nap routine each time.

Ugh! I really feel for you! E is the queen of the 30 minute crap-nap and it's driving me slowly insane! I cannot get any longer out of her no matter hoe hard I try! I get NOTHING done because by the time I'm sure she has finally fallen asleep, it's time for her to wake up again. Plus she's a beast when she's tired!!! A screamy little beast.

@shopaholic: it's where 2 hours after they wake up they have their first nap, then 3 hours after they wake up from that nap, it's time for the second nap. then 4 hours (I have heard some people do 5 hours, but 4 worked well for us!) after that nap ends it's bedtime! it was literally magic for us.

@Foodnerd81: Thanks! I'm sure it is just rough when you're in the throes of it all. And I'm sure teething is not helping. I just don't know how other people get 3 hours of naps from their LOs when I can barely get 1. :(

@Penny Lane: K is 7 months now! What is the 2,3,4 routine? Like hours awake? She IS a tired baby. But still generally a happy one. Like, when she wins and I give up on trying to get her to nap, she literally squeals, laughs, and smiles - SO happy not to nap. :/

this sounds exactly like my LO, before I switched him to a 2 nap 2, 3, 4 routine, at around 7 months. I don't think he had ever slept more than 30 minutes at a time during the day.

maybe it would be worth a try to try something like this for a week? hopefully you figure something out! a clearly tired baby who won't nap has to be one of the most frustrating things!! good luck :)

@shopaholic: ugh in sorry. It sucks. I'm sure you've read my desparate posts about C's naps. I don't have any advice other than the fact that so far, every time I just. Can't. Take it. She switches things up. I cried many times on Monday because c had been up all night, would not nap, we were bit exhausted.., then she slept through the night and has been a different baby since she woke up. I'm doing exactly the same things. Makes no sense.

How old is K? Hang in there- I'm sure it will get better eventually but it sucks so much right now.

@scg00387: Well, she has long wake times in general. I can just read her sleepy cues start right before 2 hours. But if she fights the naps, it often goes over 3-4, up to 5 hours. With me attempting to put her down every additional 30 min. or when I see her looking sleepy. :(

I literally have her strapped into the Ergo while I'm typing this, with her leaning back, head on the table. this kid. thank goodness I love her so.

@shopaholic: have you tried longer wake times? somewhere around that age, LO was doing the same thing, word for word, and I finally tried longer awake times, consistently throughout the day. A 3 - 3 - 4/5 schedule worked for him until just recently.

@Silva: I spent about 20 min, in the dark room with sound machine lying next to her. That works sometimes in the morning, but not for her last nap. I had her rolling all over, trying to pull my shirt, kick me, scratch my face, whining, trying to crawl... I keep telling myself it's just a phase. But I have no idea how to survive at home like this. Normally, I'd just take her out and walk around, but now she;s being fussy even when I do that.

Ugh that sounds terrible. I'm sorry for both of you!
We are dealing with some crappy night sleep right now. I just have to remind myself that everything changes all the time with babies. Nothing so far has lasted, so why would this? I just have to take deep breaths and wait it out.
I know nothing about sleep training, but should you abort mission if she's over tired? Will she take a nap lying next to you? That always works for my LO...we just take a nap on the bed together.

I've been trying to get K to nap in her crib so she can have longer naps (she is a serial 20-30 min. catnapper). So I've been staying home, trying to catch her sleep cues (seems to be every 2 hours), and get her in the crib. So far it's a 50/50.

Buuuutttt.... here's the kicker. After a week of trying to get her to nap at home, she now won't even catnap when we're out and about. No more naps in the strollers. And if I can't get her to nap at home, I'm screwed! She just will not nap. She has been fighting me tooth and nail. No teeth yet - that's a whole other issue. But I am being scratched, kicked, and it's all I can do to hold her while she rolls and thrashes about. And now, she won't let me put her down when she's in pain from teething. CIO lasted about 4-5 min. before she was coughing, gasping, spitting up, almost doing tumbles in her crib and hysterical from crying. So I can't hold her. I can't put her down. We can't go out. And she won't nap.
I spent 10 min. with her fighting the Ergo today to get a 25 min. nap. And then another 1hr + to get a 35 min. nap. I gave up on the last one. I think I am going to go crazy. Please, please tell me this is a phase?
