@Meridian: good to know! I'm going to try and keep consistency as much as possible and hope she can be adaptable for those one-off times throughout the week.

@Kemma: that's a good thought. I'd like to be able to sign up for a baby class or something, so maybe having a consistent time when we're home/out will work nicely for her.

@gentlelunette: something you could try is to do any outings in the morning then be home in the afternoon (or vice versa depending on when your LO naps best).

LO is at home all-day for maybe 3 days a week, so on those days we stick to the schedule and he goes back to that routine just fine. For the other days, he is either at my ILs, or we're out and about so he often sleeps in the carseat. He is 10 months, and this started working fine around 7 months.

@ScarletBegonia: @hilsy85: @gingerbebe: @Freckles: Awesome, thank you ladies for sharing your experiences! I don't want to have to live and die by the nap schedule for the rest of time, so once we get sleeping in the crib independently down pat, I'll start shaking things up with a carrier/stroller nap as needed. I'd be lying if I said I didn't miss the snuggles!

I agree with @gingerbebe: that the first nap is the most important! When i nap-trained LO1, we spent a good week to establish a routine, and after that i allowed for one nap to be when we were out and about (e.g., carrier/stroller/car ride).

I would say the first nap is always the best one to do "textbook" - if that nap is wonky it will usually throw the day off a bit. The other naps being on the go is not so disruptive, especially the last one before bedtime as you can just pop them in bed a little earlier if need be. I would also say for us, if we had an off day on naps I usually lock it down the next day and stay at home. If we travel I just expect the first few days back to be wonky and get super consistent until things are back on track.

It was totally fine for us to be more flexible once he was nap trained, especially with his 2nd/3rd nap of the day.

For us, it was as you described - we spent a good 2/3 weeks napping at home with sleep training (CIO) and got him solidly on two long naps (usually with a cat nap in the late afternoon, til he dropped that around 6 1/2 months). Interspersed in those weeks were some days we just couldn't be at home, either because of drs appts or just my cabin fever. But we stayed as consistent as possible. Once he was self settling for every nap and bedtime, I would start rocking the boat every now and again and letting him nap in the stroller, or carrier, or car seat, and very occasionally on me cause I love the cuddles. It never derailed the training, and knock on wood he is 17 months old now and hasn't had any major nap or nighttime sleep regressions except for sickness/jetlag.

Good luck!

We are currently sleep/nap training DD (almost 5 months) I know that consistency is key, so I have basically resigned myself to the fact that for the next couple of weeks, we'll be doing naps at home until they get settled again (we were getting 3 long naps in arms/carrier, but the last two days since ST have had 4 short naps).

My question is, does it have to be all or nothing forever? I loved being able to take DD out in the Beco or ring sling and have her take a nap while we were walking with a friend or at an event. If I nap train, am I relinquishing this flexibility? Is it a trade off for independent sleep?

Would love to hear about people's experiences with this. Do you have an independent sleeper who is also somewhat portable? Do you find it throws off baby's sleep if they take a few naps a week "on the go"? Am I totally overthinking this?
