@FliegepilzHut: yeah, our turning point was when she started waking up more and more at night and her sleep was getting so fragmented it wasn't good for her! So that ruined my completely passive plan of just waiting her out.

@MenagerieMama: Not a weenie! Or at least you're a weenie in good company... I think if push came to shove he could still sleep in arms, but he was starting to have trouble sleeping >35minutes even that way! :bummed:

Yep! We only really allowed minimal fussing. I'm a weenie and can't tolerate her crying for more than like 5 seconds! We did a lot of back rubbing, sitting in the room, singing etc. we just very slwoly and gently moved from where we were with naps to where we wanted to be. When we went from holding to naps in crib i started out with trying for one nap (first one) that way if it failed she had the next nap to make it up.

@MamaCate: Definitely! I will be looking into that.

ETA: After reading the no-cry nap solution, I'm currently working on her "sleep" book!

@FliegepilzHut: I also could not do CIO. No judgement but it did not work for me. There are some helpful videos from Isis parenting about "trading down" sleep associations that were helpful for me, so that might be worth looking into? They are on YouTube. I liked the no cry sleep solution book too but they would be more time intensive for you. Sleep gets better!!

@cam: That's reassuring! Thank you. This definitely feels like progress...so far.

I say if you are moving in the right direction then do it! I would happily do some patting/shushing instead of holding for a whole nap. I don't remember exactly when I could put my LO down for a nap and just leave but it was probably closer to 7 months. Good luck!

DS is 5 months and our sleep "troubles" have been many...mostly because he refused to nap anywhere other than in arms (for >35min OR after he touched the surface of the bed) until very recently and because after a few hopeful nights in which he slept 4-5 hours at the beginning of the night, he began waking every 1-2 hours EVERY NIGHT at just under 4 months.

So now we are desperation (safe!) co-sleeping and at least the sleep I'm getting is better quality...and because DS is tall and heavy, his naps in arms seemed to be getting uncomfortable for him, so we're working on napping in the crib this week.

So far, he's doing really well...minimal (a minute or two? of) crying and some fussing is typical...but he's still requiring patting/shhhing or touch to fall asleep and as an intervention when he's transitioning between sleep cycles.

Has anyone else tried to walk the fine line of allowing some fussing (I HATE listening to him cry!), while offering comfort? And though I don't feel like we have many other good options right now, am I trading one sleep association/"crutch" for another...and am I likely to seriously regret this?

TIA!
