I think we just waited it out. But we did a lot of talking about how she needed to try to hold it. Eventually she just did it on her own.

I just waited til she was dry overnight for a long time ( 2 months?) before switching to undies. She had one accident but has been dry over night for over a year.

The Oh Crap method also says they have to be physiologically ready as well, but you CAN do potty training all at once and nudge it along. But if your LO is not ready to hold it all night you will end up just getting up with them a lot at night to take them to the potty. That sounds terrible to me. We're going to just wait it out. OCPT says you can wait it out until about 3.5 years old.

We transitioned out of the nap diaper after a couple of months. It was really accomplished by making sure she used the restroom after eating/before nap. And making sure she went to the restroom IMMEDIATELY after waking up. The overnight diaper took a lot longer to get rid of.

That being said, I was pregnant during this process and really didn't want to be dealing with changing sheets in the middle of the night.

@BananaPancakes: C turned 3 in July and we trained pretty late (around 33 months, I think?). We're waaaay past the commando stage (she is great while she is awake and can hold it for 5+ hours if she wants to!), but I've tried undies during naps and she's peed herself every time we've tried. I think we need to bit the bullet and give it another shot, because I am tired of pull ups. I also agree that the diaper is giving her permission to pee, because sometimes when I change her after sleeping, it'll be (grossssss) WARM and I can tell it's a recent pee. Bah.

@HabesBabe: We used the Oh Crap! method and didn't wake overnight. He was past the 3 year mark when we trained, but was still peeing often during naps and overnight. But shortly after we trained he started actually waking up at night if he peed and wanted to be changed. He would sleep right through it before he was trained. I just decided that leaving the diaper on might be confusing his muscle memory and started leaving them off for naps (still in the no underwear phase). He stayed dry immediately. So after a week or so, we started leaving them off for bed. And lo and behold, he stopped peeing at night. I think the diaper was telling him he was still allowed to go, so he was. He's yet to wake up at night to go and it's been a few months now. Not sure how old your LO is, but it might not be as bad as you think!

@oliviaoblivia: So far they haven't pushed anything verbally, its just the written requirement to move on to the next class (have to be at least 3, and fully trained), so I've imposed it on ourselves as a goal.

@DillonLion: that's tough. I don't like how some schools push stuff like that.

You can't nap or night train, it's something that they will do when they are ready. Basically, the behavior that you are looking for is that they wake when they need to use the bathroom, and it happens when their body is ready.

@oliviaoblivia: So maybe my wait-it-out thing isn't that crazy of an idea? We have an outside force pushing us here, because she can't move up to the next classroom at school (ages 3-6 in there) until she is fully trained. She'll be 3 in 3 weeks.

@HabesBabe: Yeah I think my LO has been dry maybe like 1 or 2 times after a nap, but never ever overnight, which I guess is understandable since it is so long.

In the potty training book we're using (Oh Crap, Potty Training), they tell us to wake up the kids overnight and have them pee... then eventually they will start holding it for longer periods and then all through the night.

C has been daytime trained for months now, but I am not looking forward to this phase, so we're still waiting it out. But she wakes up after EVERY nap and every night with a full diaper!

Everything I've read says it's a physiological milestone. That you can try to get rid of diapers after three weeks of dry wakeups.

LO has been in panties during the day for over a month now, and is pretty good about staying dry.

However, she still wakes up sopping wet during naps and overnight (while wearing a diaper). Do we just need to stop diapering her for these times and after she wets herself a few times she will learn? I'm just nervous to destroy our good sleep that we have (since soiling herself will wake her up, or she'll just sleep covered in refuse), but the diaper is never dry, so I guess we need to try something else.
