Glad to hear almost everyone also keeps it swinging!! I was feeling guilty (she's taking at least 1, usually 2 naps a day in it every day, and it stays at a full swing the entire time) and now I don't :)

I keep it swinging. She naps for about 3 hours in the swing in the morning. She sleeps fine in her crib at night so I'm not worried.

Keep that mother swinging. Swing away!!! I wanted her to get as long a nap as possible, so we just kept it going.

I swing napped my oldest until 8 months. Crazy. I don't remember him having a hard time transitioning to his crib bc he was already sleep trained at night. I'm going to sleep train my youngest next week or so and do both nap and bedtime. We will see how that goes!

I was really afraid of using motion to get a good nap, because I was not sure how I'd have to break the habit. I really made my life more difficult than it needed to be those first 6 months.

I let her nap in the swing once a day during my maternity leave. The longest she would sleep for was 2-3 hours with the swing on the entire time. She started hating it after she turned 4 months old and it is currently packed up in a storage closet.

Leave it swinging. When I stop the seining he wakes up within 10 mins...

I'm transitioning him to crib this week. Next week is napping out of swing....

@meredithNYC: I read that too. But the book also says that a nap is better than no nap and currently I'm not willing to give up the killer morning swing nap!

@mrs. wagon: Well, by the time I started the technique of turning off the swing after sleepy time, LO was already over the swing and she was like, 13 weeks old. So maybe your LO just needs a little more time? And in the meantime you can keep letting her sleep while swing is in motion? I mean, a mom's sanity often rests on her LOs ability to sleep/nap well, so I think ultimately you have to go with your gut and do what you have to do.

@Andrea: Oh yeah, in the early days we always left it on. By the time I even knew that we shouldn't be doing that, she had nearly given up the swing anyway so we were just lucky that way.

I kept it on or she woke up. It was fine, it's not like she was in it forever, she outgrew the need to be in constant motion after a bit.

@meredithNYC: oh yes, I agree that sleeping in a swing or car isn't as restorative. I misunderstood what you had written. However, in the early days, the swing was easier on me. I remember at one point I was rocking her to sleep at least 8 times a day so using the swing instead was a good cheat for a little bit until I could get her to nap in a crib.

@meredithNYC: this is the reason I asked the question! I love that book because Wagon Jr. responded to the techniques so well, including stopping the swing or stroller or car and letting them go into deeper sleep. However, just like @artbee she gets up sometimes when just the music shuts off, let alone when the swinging stops. But sometimes when we stop the swinging because she's been sleeping in there for like 3 hours straight, she keeps sleeping and seems to enter an even deeper sleep.

That being said, she won't fall asleep in the swing-- we have to rock her to sleep, then once she's almost asleep she'll let us put her in the swing at that point.

It claims that if motion is aiding the baby's sleep then it isn't really as restorative as sleeping while still. I don't know what to believe, to be honest. I was just desperate for some good, quality naps and a well rested baby so I figured I would give it a shot. But, she seemed to give up the swing for the most part after we started sleep training, so I can't really say whether it made a difference.

@meredithNYC: why does it say not to?

I turned it off because I didn't want her to get too used to the motion. She didn't wake up.

When your LO naps in the swing, do you turn the swing off after they're asleep, or leave it on for the entire nap?
