At 5 months we were starting to shift to 3 naps a day, usually a short morning nap (30-45 mins), long afternoon nap (2-3 hours) and a short evening nap (30 mins). At 6 months, we are pretty much down to 2 long naps (2-2.5 hours) and sometimes a short evening on the drive home from daycare if she had a she other nap than usual that day.

@Mrs. Champagne: We just got back from a long road trip to Toronto and Montreal and naps/bedtime weren't managed as usual. I noticed longer nights, more uninterrupted sleep at night, and baby falling asleep for naps easily (even in his ergo, which he NEVER does). This is making me wonder if he needs more wake time than I've been giving, especially after 2 maps.

@Mrs. Champagne: hi! We are having longer naps here. At least one nap per day is over 1.5 hrs, but that sometimes includes rocking him back to sleep after he wakes up.

@Mrs. Champagne: I don't think it would have worked with my LO before she was developmentally ready to sleep longer. If I was to do it again, I would try once a week or so, just to see if it would work and not stress until then. If it's a developmental thing, it's not like you are doing somethig "wrong". Oh, and her naps got much longer and more consistent when we moved to 2 naps.

@BeBop: I wonder if I just need to keep him up much longer and aim for two good naps?? My friends baby didn't nap ever until daycare too! Lol. Maybe I need to send him to daycare for a week

Okay so I am no help, but when my LO was 5 months, we were on 3 crap naps a day. They usually lasted 30 minutes each. We moved when she was about 6 months old and our life was just bonkers, and she kind of stayed up later because there was a week or so there when we were moving that I just didn't have time to go rock her to sleep, so she stayed up later and somehow we shifted into 2 (mid morning and mid afternoon) naps that were a little longer. They were typically 45 mins each I think. I remember her sleeping longer in the afternoon a couple of times and my husband and I basically danced around the house when that happened.

It wasn't until she started daycare at 11 months that they put the Nap Smackdown on her and she went to their one nap schedule. They assured me when she started she would adjust to one nap, no big deal, and I was so skeptical. Well in about a week, homegirl was taking a solid 1.5-2 hour nap, just one a day. So that made me think that if I would have just cracked a whip on her schedule and kept her busy so she'd stay up later, maybe I could have gotten fewer/longer naps out of her in the earlier months.

@merbaby14: @lemondrop: I've tried a similar schedule but he sleeps for 30 minutes on the dot! I've tried keeping up for less than two hours, three hours, etc. I'm going to try to stick to it and hope he lengthens on his own?? Thanks!

@rolypoly: I've never been able to resoothe. I've tried but every time he sees me he smiles and squeals and is wide awake! Lol

@Grace: maybe I should try this more. I have left him for up to 20 mins and he just babbles to himself in there. But I can try again. I need to get him out of this 30 minute habit!

@Bao: OMG! That's awesome!

Oh, mine did that too. It was awful, I spent all day trying to get her to sleep. Just before she turned 6 mo old, I was cleaning the bathroom when she woke. I said to myself "I'll just finish the toilet first and then get her". She fell back asleep and slept another HOUR! Since then, if she wakes before 60 min, I wait 10 min before getting her. She almost always goes back to sleep in 8 min. And after a week she stopped waking at the 30 min mark altogether.

We moved from four naps to three naps right before 5 months, and it actually did wonders for extending the length of his naps. We had a rule we would "resoothe" if he woke up prior to 40 minutes, and just get him up if it was after 40 minutes.
@merbaby's schedule looks really close to our 5 month schedule, just and hour later on all fronts.

@Mrs. Champagne: my LO is just over 5 months and we've been doing 3 naps a day now for a few weeks. We also struggled with short ones at first and still sometimes now too but he's been getting better in his own with time for some of them.

He also sleeps from 8-6 so I thought Id share our target schedule in case you want to try these timings. Often his longest naps are only an hour so I may stretch his awake time or desperately try to get him back to sleep in the stroller if he wakes up really early from a nap and it's threatening to completely derail our evening stretch.

6-wake and eat
8-nap
9:30 wake and feed
11:30 nap
1 feed
3/3:30 nap
4:30 feed
7 begin bath/ bedtime routine
7:30 eat
8 sleep

I will be following this board closely because I have the same problem. EXCEPT I now bounce and hold my babe through his entire nap to help him through the transitions. Crazy, I know. And night sleep is pretty bad too (although CIO made a world of difference at bedtime only).

My LO was/is like that. She still takes 3 naps a day at 11 months! The naps were getting longer & I thought we were transitioning to two naps but they are back to short sweet naps now. He may just prefer to cat nap. I know it succckkksss, but honestly, nothing has changed it for us.

@Mrs. Champagne: I would try it and see! I would maybe try 2 hours 15 minutes to start. If that doesn't help, increase to 2 hours 30 minutes. Just try a longer wind down routine and keep things calm that last half hour before nap time so he doesn't get overtired.

@Bao: Gahh isn't it annoying? I just need more than 30 minutes to get things done! Luckily night sleep is going good... 8pm-6amish usually. I've always pumped in the mornings and we give him a bottle of pumped milk before bed. I think that helps fill him up. The last couple weeks he had a few wake ups for his soother and some mornings getting up at 4 to eat, but I think we are passed that.... I hope! I hope E starts sleeping better for you at night!

have you tried extending his awake time?? That was right around the age where I figured out LO needed a longer awake time in order to sleep through one sleep cycle. Someone on here once explained it really well, doubt I will but ill try haha- something like too short of an awake time causing short nap, then in a weird undertired-overtired loop because of short naps.

At 5 months M was on 3 naps a day- generally around 9am, 1pm, and then a very short cat nap around 5:30pm (30-45 minutes).

Just as the title says...

What were naps like around 5 months old? DS will be 5 months next week (!!!) and he is still napping 4 TIMES A DAY! He only naps for 30 minutes max. Usually 30 minutes on the dot. I know he is still tired, because if he naps in bed with me he will nap for over an hour.

ANY suggestions on lengthening naps are also welcome! I've tried it all.. slightly waking before 30 mins to "reset" his clock, jiggling his mattress to try to keep him asleep, holding his arms from minute 25 on so he doesn't jostle awake, standing by to put a soother in his mouth as soon as he wakes, feeding him right before nap so he is nice and full ... and on and on and ON! Nothing helps and I might lose my mind soon.. especially because I KNOW he is still tired and I KNOW he can sleep longer!

Typically he is up for 2 hours and then down for 30 minutes.. and repeat all damn day. If he gets up super early he has 5 naps in a day. What was wake time like at this age for your LO?

Soooo many questions! TL;DR: how many naps? how much wake time? TIPS for longer naps?! :meh:
