I didn't worry about it at that age. I think at that age they sleep when they need it. I definitely agree with @septca: about the 2-3-4 schedule being helpful once LO makes the move to two naps. That worked well for us for almost 6 months! DS is now on one nap a day and usually goes to bed 4.5-5 hours after he wakes up from the nap. He's coming up on 13 months.

@autumnlove: what time does she wake up in the morning? 6:30 is close to N's new schedule at night. She went down again tonight around 6:30 and is still asleep. I'm scared it's her new bedtime which will mean earlier wake ups!!

At that age, I wasn't worried about it - I let DD set her own schedule. Once she was on two naps a day, I found that the 2-3-4 schedule worked really well for us. Now that she takes one nap, she is usually awake for about 4 hours before bedtime.

Weekend Naps are at 1 or 1:30 and LO 2 usually sleeps until 4 or 5. Bedtime is at 6:30 or 7. She doesn't nap well at daycare.

we just let her sleep and figured she knew how much sleep she needed, and she definitely had her times when that nap turned into a really long nap and i got nervous, but it never seemed to impact her sleep. However, she's now almost 7 months and that's starting to change. So yes, there will come a time when you need to start spacing that last nap better, but I think you'll know pretty quickly when that's a problem! for us at least, she now makes it clear she needs playtime between every nap/sleep, whereas in the past, if she woke up from a nap at 6pm, she'd go back down shortly after for the night without an issue. now, later nap means later bedtime.

No advice cause I'm having the opposite problem at 17 weeks - my son seems to have fallen into the pattern of taking two short-ish naps in the morning (an hour or less) and then a long nap in the afternoon (2-3 hours)...the past couple of days he's only just made it til 4 in his afternoon nap - and bedtime is 7...so he's got a long awake period. But, it seems to be working! The past 3/4 days he's been on this schedule he's slept 8-10 hour stretches and 12-13 hrs total overnight.
Anyway - i wish I could give you some advice (or that our little ones could split the difference so we'd both be happy!)

At that age I was making sure she was awake at least an hour before bedtime (7pm). Sometimes that meant the afternoon nap was a little shorter, but it worked for us.

What age did you actively try to avoid naps close to bedtime? Also, how many hours before bedtime would you let the last nap end?

We do the obvious thing and let our 14 week old LO sleep whenever she shows us she's tired (usually she can last 65-75 minutes awake) and her last nap ends about an hour before bedtime. I always assumed there would come a time that we need to be cautious of the timing though.

Lately she's been having some super long naps. She usually takes five or six 40 minute naps a day (major catnapper!). The last nap is usually from 6:00-6:45, but the past week she's taken some two hour naps during that time. Yesterday and today she slept from 5:30-7:45, and she only woke up because something woke her. We normally put her down for bed around 8:00, so the late nap makes me nervous for night time, but she obviously wants/needs some sleep. I wonder if this is her moving her bedtime super early or just going through a growth spurt. Either way I'm happy for the long naps, but did anyone else experience this?
