At 6 weeks there is a major growth spurt, which means that baby is eating more and sleeping more. I would just try to make sure he gets in a good nursing session (so keep him awake long enough to eat, do breast compressions while he's nursing to keep him interested) so that he's not snacking all day and is getting hindmilk, but then once he's asleep, I wouldn't wake him up. I would prob pop him off the boob, just because that was never that comfortable for me to have LO sleep on me like that. As for the rest of the schedule, I would just follow his lead. It's ok to have a few days where he eats sleeps eats sleeps; you may find that a few days after that he suddenly has a slightly longer wake time or is more alert. Just remember he's still so little :) and babies don't know anything about schedules!

I remember that was sort of my problem with the Eat awake/play sleep schedule. I wasn't trying to follow the schedule too much, but I noticed that she was falling into that pattern so I was going with it. However, I started to just wing it and do now as it is less frustrating in the long run (I feel). I stay at home though and have a year of mat leave so I don't have to prep her for anything.

I felt less stressed when I just let her do her own thing. The only thing I tried to do was make sure she wasn't eating more frequently than every 1.5 hours unless necessary like she was really hungry/cluster feeding. I didn't want to make snacking a habit. I would enjoy those nursing naps while you can still get them. :). At nearly 5 months now they don't happen very often for me and if they do I just let her sleep because she must be tired. For a while she was only doing 1.5 hours of napping in total for the day (even at 8 weeks old) and still is only doing maybe 2.5 hours in total plus 8-9 hours at night.

*yo answer your questions: I would count a nursing nap as a nap or sleep time if your lo continues sleeping longer than say 10 minutes. Shorter than that shouldn't really interfere with your schedule. Sometimes mine falls asleep for about 5 minutes, but then wakes up and she'll go for her nap later whenever she would have if she hadn't fallen asleep while nursing.

I just kind of wing it.
At this age I'm happy as long as they are sleeping or eating. Regular sleep/eat/wake schedules evolve and in a couple months things are more structured. At six weeks nursing to sleep is not a problem... Heck all my girls nursed to sleep until they didn't want to anymore and are unicorn sleepers.
Watch your baby and not the clock.

I think at that age I just let it be what it was, I can't remember trying to keep her awake, only time was to make sure she ate enough so she wasn't wanting to eat again in 30 mins MOTN

Care to comment? You all were very helpful with the waketime concept on my other thread about daytime naps a couple weeks ago.

So for the past couple of weeks I have been trying to follow a basic eat, wake, sleep schedule with LO who is 6 weeks old. I have been trying for a wake time of about 60 minutes total, but I've been kind of playing with it to see what is optimal. I usually wait for the first yawn and then immediately try to put him down, usually it takes about 10 minutes, depending on how consistent/dedicated I am being with it.

However, what really screws me up with wake times, is what to do when he falls asleep while nursing. Sometimes he stops nursing, and sometimes he continues nursing but his eyes are completely shut and his breathing & sucking is completely rhythmic. I try to keep him awake during nursing generally, but I don't want to fight his natural urges, especially if I feel he's really tired.

Would you count nursing nap as true naps, or nursing time? How does that affect wake time? How does it affect the next nap? If you want to separate nursing and sleeping during the day (with a EWS/EASY routine ), how big of an issue is it if he falls asleep during nursing at least once a day?
