@BabyTsMom: he's always been a crap sleeper so I guess I didn't notice more than usual. I was referencing trip from when he was around 2. At almost three the only way to get him to nap at home is a car ride. I'm currently sitting in the car while he naps. At school he naps like a champ... Grrr

I'm not against some CIO while on vacation - like 15 minutes. But I've already wrapped my head around that when we go to the Bahamas in June, LO is probably going to skip some naps, and we will just put her to bed early those days. I'm also hoping that we can get her to take naps in the stroller but I'm not counting on it.

ETA: Overtired toddlers SUCK so I am not making light of it but in our experience as long as LO is entertained it's not as bad. She's almost 2.5 though. Her nighttime sleep is not disrupted if she skips her nap - if anything she sleeps longer and deeper. When she was first on one nap, she NEEDED it and we would have done anything to get her to nap including holding her.

@T.H.O.U.: @travellingbee: did you have a difficult time with naps when you got home? How old were your LOs? Mine is almost 2.
@Alivoo01: he'll definitely fall asleep in the car seat but the car has to be moving! no luck transferring. and, yeah it would be wailing if we CIO. :(
@psw27: same here. roughly 10-15 min of loud crying/wailing. any more than that and it's likely not happening...
I've never done a stroller nap before but I might have to try that.

I would either CIO (for a very short period of time... with my LO he is either asleep within 10 minutes or it isn't happening) or I would just deal with it (ie no nap). I would probably try for a stroller nap but that is uncommon these days.

Will your LO go to sleep in his car seat? If so, maybe a quick drive to put him to sleep then transfer? Otherwise, maybe a stroller nap?

I wouldn't CIO in the hotel room since I'd be afraid I'd be disturbing other hotel guests. Then again, it depends on how long your LO would cry out loud for or if it's more of a whine cry than wailing.

We cannot skip naps ... especially for 6 days. I would be afraid that would get us into no more nap territory!

I assume you'd have to be in the hotel room/suite when they are napping ... if the only thing that worked was laying with LO, I would do that.

We recently went to Hawaii. LO took a bit longer to go down than normal, but thankfully, it wasn't too rough. We were with another family, so we tried to keep bedtime as "gentle" as possible, with little to no CIO.

When we went away with K at 18 mos we took the approach to explain to her "its fine if you dont nap but you will sit in the pnp for 2 hours and decompress"...

We were better for forcing her to nap at least a little.

We also did two car naps - where we planned long drives around nap time knowing she would doze...we dont like to use it as a crutch but it was the best we could do.

We had some variations of this when we took LO on her first big vacation at 3 months (to Hawaii). Our ace in the hole was always to put her in the Lillebaby and walk around with the hood up until she fell asleep and then transfer her to the PnP. Or, just let her nap in the Lillebaby or stroller while we walked around. Travel can mean some disruptions in sleep schedule but I'm generally not willing to give up on the nap entirely.

I wouldn't CIO on vacation though.

I typically try to avoid CIO in hotels because I don't want to disturb others, so I'd do a stroller nap/car nap if possible, then try holding (but my son will only sleep for 45 minutes max on me). I'm not totally opposed to letting him cry, I've done it a lot for bed because it eventually comes down to being my only option - I just try to run the shower for a bit to try and drown out the cries. I think you just have to decide based on your child - ie will 10-15 minutes of crying lead to less crying overall? (This is literally my problem right now - I've been getting my son after 5-10 minutes of crying but it just resets the cycle and has led to way more crying that I would probably have had if I'd just let him keep crying for a bit longer and actually fall asleep)

@gingerbebe: My thoughts exactly! Mid-afternoon, AND it's 6 whole days?! I could hold my child for a nap for one, maybe two days, but not for an entire week. Knowing that it's for a longer trip, I would start CIO early in the week so that they would hopefully be on schedule by day 2 or 3.

On vacation I'd do stroller naps for sure (assuming your LO will take a stroller nap). That way you get to be out and about and not stuck inside during naptime, plus you don't need to deal with CIO issues.

this happened to us on vacation so we did stroller naps. i'd walk for the first 10 mins to get him down, and then he would sleep in the stroller for almost the usual time. when we got home, it only took 2 days of a little CIO to get back to crib naps.

Our LO is a disaster without naps so we would do what it took. Ours is usually fine in hotels but during some of the times that she has fought naps, we have had luck getting LO to nap by putting her in bed with us and having one of us take a nap (or pretend to) next to her. If that didn't work and she'd been fighting the nap for more than say 30 min, we'd see if she'd nap in the stroller, at least for a little while.

If your kid is on one nap, I'm assuming its something like 1-3pm, when most people aren't in their rooms anyway, so I wouldn't worry about CIO too much. Especially since its for 6 days! But I would expect shorter naps, at least at first, and slightly earlier bedtimes.

I might ask the hotel if they could put you in a room where the adjacent room(s) are empty because you have a crying infant and you don't want to bother other guests.

We try to stay in suites or condos so that we can give DS privacy while he sleeps, although on our last vacation, we found the walk in closet large enough to fit his PNP. The hotel room should have blackout curtains, but we always travel with a set of blackout curtains and thumbtacks to cordon off a space if necessary. We also travel with our Marpac Dohm to keep things quiet. If the hotel can provide a humidifier (hotel rooms are so dry!) that can also offer another layer of soundproofing.

I've had parents tell me they even roll the infant crib into the bathroom and have the baby sleep in there (and use the lobby bathroom if they need to go!).

Oh, I voted for skip it but actually I didn't read all your options and might opt for holding them for the whole nap. When we go on vacation we sort of throw rules out the window and if the only way to get my son to nap is to lay down with him, I'll do that.

Let's say you're on vacation with your LO, who's on one nap. If LO doesn't go down for nap easily or outright refuses, crying/screaming, what do you do in this case? (Assuming you are in the hotel room for nap, there's sufficient darkness, no noise distractions, etc).
