Mine take crap naps at daycare and have been going two days a week for a year and a half. We bump up dinner and bedtime if it's really rough, let them watch tv during the witching hour and just say, it is what it is!

My son took forever to nap at daycare, but it was largely because he went from one extreme to the other and he couldnt use his pacifier.

It took a teacher basically giving up her lunch for weeks to sit next to him and hold his hand. That woman is as good as gold.

@Mrs. Lion: ahhh...I think so? I don't remember now! The school should tell you, though. It's either pack n play size or crib size I believe.

when we first sent my son to daycare he was a year old and i was super worried about him on a cot, but he was fine from day one. i second what everyone else says about peer pressure - they want to do what everyone else is doing. also i feel like kids arent' nearly as difficult and cranky for teachers/outsiders as they are with a parent - and that makes a difference. he's now almost 3 and still taking great naps at daycare!

My son does MDO 2x a week and the problem is twofold. They go down earlier than he normally would and wake up earlier than he normally would. He lays down fine but gets a shorter nap and just goes to bed about 30 min earlier on those days!

I see you are using a cot- but wanted to share our nap mat. we really love it. it's this brand and is super thick and comfy!

@Mrs. Lion: they usually tell you if they provide the sheet or if you provide it. At ours, they provide it. Then we send her fuzzy blanket and baby doll (her "lovey") for naptime. They sleep on cots at lo's daycare, too.

I'm going to be the outlier and say my kid USED to sleep better at school than at home but now that she's older that's totally changed, she's almost 3 now. She hardly ever naps at school. She lays on her mat quietly and isn't disruptive, but she doesn't sleep. At home, I read a book, and walk out, and she sleeps for 3 hours. I think the problem is that at home we've noticed she's really not ready for nap until 1pm. At school, nap time is 12-2pm, and now that she's older, I think she's just not ready to sleep after only 4.5 hours of awake time.

What do you send for your child to sleep with/on? they have the standard little blue cots.

We had a rough transition to preschool naps (no naps at all for almost 2 weeks!). And my son is a 2-3 hour napped. I almost called it quits, but eventually it clicked Nd now he can put himself to sleep. The hardest thing was the lack of a big transition. At home we would read a book, sit in the chair, etc. but at preschool they turn music on and you pretty much just lay down. That was tough for him but it all worked out! (Having his favorite blankets is key.)

My DS is a 3 hour napper when he's home too. But daycare naps aren't too bad. The whole school has quiet/nap time at the same time, 12:30-3. They turn off a bunch of lights and play quiet music and he sleeps somewhere around 2 hours most days. I'd probably move bed time up by a half hour or so on school days if he seems to get over tired. But my son just kinda rolls with it.

Same as everybody else, B is a great napper at daycare. I think it's something about all the kids doing it at the same time, same reason he'll eat things there that he won't eat at home.

I was really worried about nap time because C can have a really difficult time going down at home for a nap (then she gets overtired and becomes so incredibly cranky for the rest of the day). She needs a very defined routine for naps and some days I want to pull my hair out.

But I shouldn't have worried so much because she is a ROCKSTAR napper at daycare. Seriously, they tell me she goes over to get her bunny and blankie, walks over to the mat, and falls asleep. Why won't she do this at home?!

We struggled with naps for a long time at daycare. The nice thing about daycare is they have a set time for nap every day and the kids all know the routine. They all go to their mats and are required to stay quietly on them, whether they sleep or not. Sending a favorite blanket and toy to snuggle are a good way to comfort him while he's there. Some places turn down the lights, others leave them on. Either way, the kids adjust amazingly well. Good luck with the daycare!!

@Mrs. Lion: We were really worried about the same with both of our kids, as they took long naps and weren't easy to get down for those naps either. But for whatever reason, the kids had no problems sleeping at daycare!! They probably slept better there than they did at home.

So I think we decided to have my 2.5 year old start in a full day daycare program 2 days per week. I think he will be totally fine, with the exception of his nap. He takes a 3 hour nap at home, and is really really prone to getting overtired and miserable and when that happens he stops sleeping. Up all night, early mornings, etc. If he gets into one of those cycles he has gotten to where he is only sleeping 8-9 hours total in 24 as opposed to his usual 13.

I would love to hear your experiences! How do you help your child have a good naptime at daycare? Is there anything we can do? If they don't take good naps, how do you cope? How long did it take your child to adjust, especially if they started at daycare when they were a bit older?
