And one last note before bed, since the homebirth issue is my fear, not any actual risk, a birth center doesn't have to actually *be* any safer, as long as I feel safer.

@mamamoose- Thanks, I may be in touch once things settle.

Also, I would be unlikely to be high risk for the abruption issue. My doctor said it's not hereditary, but it's extremely rare so for both my mother and my (maternal) grandmother to have had them is unexpected and worth watching.

@LizSmith: Vandy midwives will definitely be your best bet in Nashville. If you decide to go the hospital route let me know and I can give you some info. I loved my OB from TN Women's Care and had a fabulous experience delivering at Centennial.

@arden, the birth center I wanted in Denver is literally across the street from the hospital, so that's what I really wanted. I was hoping there'd be a similarly close center in Nashville, though I didn't expect it.

@daniellemybelle, thanks for the information. I'll look into it!

@LizSmith: The Vanderbilt Midwives are awesome! I would definitely recommend looking around their FB group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/367051987303/

They have birthing suites with deep laboring tubs, though you unfortunately have to get out to deliver the baby. But they are extremely supportive of natural birth and low intervention overall. While it's a hospital setting, I think its a great option in Nashville. Personally I am really happy we will have access to everything a hospital offers, with a midwifery model.

Unless you were planning on a in-hospital birth center, how is a home birth any different than a freestanding birth center when it comes to complications? Midwives bring the same equipment to the home that birth centers have.
I would interview a couple of midwives and talk about whether or not your family history classifies you as high risk, and go from there.

It's at least a couple hours away. I just don't want to be that far, for the same reason I wouldn't do a homebirth. I'd like to though.

Not from Nashville, but my first thought was how far will you be far from The Farm Midwifery Center in Summertown, TN?

Are any bees from the Nashville, TN area? We just found out we're moving there in a month or so. This is overall good news (great moving bonus, and it's where all of our family lives), but Denver has a great birthing center that I was really hoping to give birth at. From what I can tell, Nashville has no birthing centers, and no hospitals that offer water birth as an option.

A home birth is not an option for me. I respect those who make that choice, but my grandmother and mother both had placental abruptions, and I would be far more scared to be at home. A birth center would have been the next best thing, but without that available I'm now concerned about being stuck in a hospital and winding up with more interventions, etc.

So anyone from around Nashville have any thoughts?
