We have had a ton of success with ivy leaf extract. The kind we have I got abroad and it looks like the one made for the US market has different ingredients but I would ask your doctor for a suggestion. The active ingredient is hedera helix and I find it starts working by the third dose.

@Mrs. Goose: can you really do that once they are mobile? C is almost 2.5 and stands up and readjusts herself before going to sleep. She does usually end up with her head in the same place so it might work. I tried convincing her to sleep with her head on a pillow but no luck.

It might help to elevate the head of their bed. When I have a bad cold, lying down for sleep brings on the coughing, it's something about that position.

@Foodnerd81: My son's cough is still lingering on for 3 weeks now but it is not effecting his sleep anymore. When he was really in the thick of it with the runny nose and congestion I broke down and gave him the benedryl that the doctor recommended. She said that since hes over 20 lbs he could have whole teaspoon and it really did help him sleep, which is what he needed.
I hate that he is still coughing. I took him to doctor a week ago and his lungs were clear but I'm still nervous because his grandpa, who he spends every day with, just had pneumonia. Doc said she has already seen a lot of this and its going to be a long winter. Great!

@regberadaisy: Yes, that was me! My son was exhibiting asthmatic symptoms 3 years ago now, and we were advised at that time to run an air purifier instead of a humidifier.

When we have coughs now that are the result of a cold, we treat with Hylands or Zarbees. I will occasionally treat with the nebulizer, but only when I've gone to the doctor and gotten the all clear from them.

@Beehive: we use this too. I feel like it actually works. If DS has a cold and wakes up coughing in the middle of the night, I'll give him a dose and he doesn't cough for the rest of the night.

@Foodnerd81: I put the oil right into the water tank. Just 2-3 drops. I think when she was right at the 2 piece but not old enough to be reasoned with age I just put her back in footed pjs when I needed to put the vapor rub on.

@regberadaisy: yeah cool mist. It's a small cheap one though. I should try the vapor rub on her feet- she's in two piece pjs and likes to take her socks off though. You out the oil right in the water in the humidifier or is there a separate spot for it? Come to think of it ours might have a separate little spot. I tried giving her a real pillow to help drain but she isn't using it.

@red_seattle: I've heard the same regarding asthma and humidifiers. . I heard it from @looch: I think her son has asthma?
Thankfully, my littles don't have asthma so I run a cool mist humidifier during most of cold/flu season. We live up north where it's very dry. I would be reluctant to run it often if you live in an area with a lot of moisture already

@Foodnerd81: cool mist I assume? I also do vapor rub(I like maty's) on the bottom of their feet because my pediatrician thinks they're still too young to put it on their chest. I also put a few drops of eucalyptus oil in the humidifier. I also put a few drops of eucalyptus oil in a bowl and run a steam shower. The eucalyptus is supposed to help break up the mucous.

Bumping this again- gave my LO the hylands night cold and cough tonight and she went to sleep great but now a few hours later she keeps coughing and I know it's disturbing her sleep. Same thing happened last night to the point that Dh had to go in and sleep with her. Any advice for helping her stay asleep? She's only coughing while she sleeps, during the day she's fine.

Humidifier is running but I think it's not very effective even in her small room.

@twoofeverything: this is a bit of a thread jack, (sorry!) but can you tell me more about the humidifier use? I know people recommend them all the time, but I read that they're actually not great for kids with asthma, so we stopped using it for DS. (Also, we realized our house has enough moisture in the air [we are in Seattle] that it seemed pointless to run a humidifier too. It just encourages mold growt.) But we'd try it again if it helps. We're old pros at the "cough-cough-gag-throw up" all night long routine with every stinking cold (though his frequency of catching colds has gone way down since we started treating his asthma.)

My DS is 3 and is a veteran of three pneumonias and asthma/reactive airway. although we have a big arsenal of rescue inhalers and steroids, I swear by 20+ minute steamy "baths" (put some chest rub on beforehand), warm honey or Zarbees, and a humidifier on high RIGHT next to their bed. also, obviously not natural, but our pediatrician has recommended doing a half-dose of children's Benadryl when a coughing fit lasts for 20 minutes after you've tried everything. it gets them to stop coughing by inducing relaxation/sleep. I've also heated up a bed buddy/rice heat pack and put it on his chest. Good luck, Mama; coughing is so sad and scary!

Just reading this now since my LO keeps waking up miserable with a cough. I bought some hylands nighttime cold and cough, but we tried doing some warm honey water first to see if it helps. Poor thing is so sad.

Any one else like the hylands? I'm sort of skeptical...

I know coughs can linger so I usually don't worry about them. I just put vapor rub on their soles and run a cool most humidifier with eucalyptus oil at night to help them sleep.

My 3.5 year old has had a cough for a week and just now had a coughing fit for almost 20 minutes. She threw up 3x from coughing so much.

I gave her a tablespoon of honey and had her drink some honey water. But she is still coughing a lot. Any tried and tested natural remedies?

My pediatrician doesn't think cough/cold medicine for kids work and I tend to feel the same. But I'm willing to be convinced otherwise right now!
