i'm so sorry you're going through this.
i found out at 9 weeks that the baby had stopped growing around 6 weeks. my doctor didn't offer me the choice of a prescription, and i opted to have a d&c rather than wait for it to happen naturally, because i didn't know how long it would take. i wasn't knocked out for the procedure, and it was actually pretty painful for me. personally, though, i think going through that physical pain helped distract(?) me from the emotional pain. hard to explain...

I'm so so sorry or your loss. I can't speak to misoprostol. I miscarried naturally and it was intensely painful yet somehow cathartic?

Again I'm so sorry you have to make this choice.

I'm sorry for your loss. I just had a miscarriage at the beginning of March at 7 weeks along. We saw the heartbeat on Monday and I miscarried on Tuesday. I chose to take the pills vaginally because I wanted to avoid a D&C due to the possible future fertility risks. I didn't get bad cramping with them but I did get nausea for a few hours. Good luck.

ETA - I think my cramping wasn't bad because I had horrible cramping Tuesday morning while at work. I miscarried at work while teaching a class so I just had to "finish" the miscarriage with the pills.

i had a miscarriage naturally. I started spotting/bleeding, and at 9 weeks they said the baby had stopped at 7 1/2 weeks. I decided I would take the pills if I didn't go naturally after a few days, and that I didn't want to do a d&c. Within 3 days, I had cramps in the early afternoon, and it got progressively worse for the next couple of hours, and for an hour I must have had contractions because I was cramping off and on real bad, it was like a real bad cramp. I then went to pee, and I felt something gush out. The cramping wasn't as bad anymore, but I did still have some that night. I had heavy bleeding and for the next week, it was like the stages of a period. I went to the Dr to make sure it was all ok.

Sorry for your loss, I know it's hard.

I'm so sorry for your lost and hate you and DH have to go through this. I had a miscarriage around this time last year but it was natural and I was going on 7 weeks but they told me that if I didn't pass it naturally they would give me misprostol and if that didn't work they would do a d&c but like I say everything passed naturally so I didn't need it. I hope you can make a decision and I wish you all the luck, love and prayers

Thank you all so much for sharing your stories and sympathies. It really means a lot to me. Truly a lot.

You've all given me a lot to think about. I'm still undecided (so feel free to continue to share!), but some further research leads me to believe the Misoprostol might not be as effective as it could be if your progesterone hasn't dropped yet, so I may be better off waiting at least a few days since I was on progesterone suppositories this whole time.

I'm very grateful for this community and your support even though I haven't been around here long. <3

I'm so sorry you're going through this.

I took the pills with my first miscarriage because I wanted to avoid getting a d&c and I wanted to move on. I'd read on miscarriage forums that women can wait weeks to miscarry naturally, and I couldn't do that. It wasn't easy. I felt very painful cramps (nowhere near contractions though) that lasted hours, and then I passed the sac. It was the middle of the night and I was all alone.I didn't really know what was going to happen and hadn't really thought about it before that moment. I had to pick up the sac (pretty large) with a tissue and I flushed it down the toilet. It was just really, really sad more than anything having to see it. :(

The second time I got a d&c and it was pretty easy.

I'm so sorry your going through this. We found out about 10w appointment that the baby had stopped growing at 8w. I hoes I take the medication that day around 11am and by 3pm it was pretty much over. I will say that I was surprised by how muh the cramping hurt and it was similar to contractions I experienced during labor with my son. I continued to bleed for 7.5 weeks afterwards and had to go back for blood work and ultrasounds after to ensure that my levels were going down and that everything had been expelled. I'm not sure I would chose to go that route again, if I had to do it over. The "not knowing" if everything was done during those 7.5 weeks was brutal.

I'm terribly sorry for your loss

I found out that I had a blighted ovum when I was about as far along as you are. I took the Misoprostol at the recommendation of my OB, and after 5 days, nothing had happened. I was really freaked out that I would start cramping and bleeding unexpectedly while I was at work, and so when I went back in for a follow-up appointment, I saw a different doctor and he ordered a D&C for me that day. Long story short, I ended up having to wait until almost 9 pm for my surgery, and while I was waiting I started having some bleeding. I was told afterward that that was the Misoprostol finally kicking in and that it actually made the D&C go even smoother than expected. Personally, I was glad to have had the D&C, because the waiting and wondering was getting to me, and I was happy just to have some closure.

So sorry that you even have to make this decision.

So sorry for your loss

I had a D&C after no heartbeat was discovered at my 12 week ultrasound. While it was very emotional, I was in and out of the hospital in 3 hours, with very minimal spotting or cramping. The next day, I was physically fine.

I have a friend who chose the medication and it was much harder for her, both emotionally and physically. She bled for 2 months!

Good luck.

I'm really sorry you're going through this. I found out at 9.5 weeks that our first had stopped growing past 6 weeks. I chose to miscarry naturally, without any medication.

This might be sorta TMI, but I thought you might want to know how it happened for me.

After we found out we'd lost the baby, I didn't spontaneously start to bleed. In fact, it took about 10 days before my body started let go. That was hard - the waiting. (FYI, my doctor said she was okay with me waiting up to 2 weeks to miscarry naturally. Longer than that, she really encouraged a D&C). I just wore overnight pads 24/7, since I didn't know when it would happen. We had heard that semen can help bring on contractions, so after about a week of waiting, DH and I did the deed quite a bit to try and get things going.

At first, I started getting brown discharge, which then turned to pinkish red discharge for a day or two. Then I had light cramps off and on for a day or two. Then one day at work I started getting cramps that felt like period cramps. Except they steadily got worse and I realized they were contractions. They kept getting closer and closer together and stronger. At the peak, the contractions lasted for about a minute, with 2-3 minutes in between. I was sitting down at my desk the whole time with my door closed, whimpering, but I could get through them with deep slow breaths. When I stood up to go to the bathroom, I felt something slip out of me and knew it had happened. Once the cramps started, I would say it was over in about an hour or two.

This is the sorta gross part and I have no idea if your doctor will want to do the same, but my doctor wanted me to bring in the tissue to the lab for analysis to ensure that everything had come out. They really don't want an incomplete miscarriage because it can lead to infection and they want to ensure the placenta came out. I didn't really look closely at the mass (it was just a bloody blob), but I put everything in a small tupperware and took it to the lab.

Once the miscarriage happened, I had fresh red bleeding (but not really heavy bleeding), like a period, for about 2 days. Then it was over. If you have very heavy bleeding afterwards (like more than pad an hour) for several hours, go straight to the ER. My friend also chose to have a natural miscarriage, but she wouldn't stop bleeding because it was incomplete and lost a lot of blood.

Hope this helps you make a decision. A lot of women choose to go with the D&C because its faster and more controlled. I chose to go naturally because I just believed my body would do what it was going to do when it was ready. It was hard waiting for the miscarriage to happen, but we don't regret our decision because it gave DH and I time to process what was happening and mourn. By the time it happened, we were prepared for it and I think it really helped us recover emotionally a lot faster.

Hugs to you.

I'm so so sorry for your loss. I went through a similar decision and chose the Misoprostol. Emotionally, I wanted to move on, and so I didn't want to wait. My experience was probably as good as one could expect, given the circumstances. I definitely did need the tylenol-3 that they prescribed, but otherwise, I was ok. Please be aware that it takes a different amount of time to work in different people. In my case, I took it in the late afternoon and the worst was over by around 10pm that night. But it took another few days for everything to be "over." I took it on a Friday so I had the weekend to recover, and that was a good choice for me. Also, my DH was very good about being there to support me the whole time.

Hugs to you! I know this is such a personal decision.

I just wanted to say i'm sorry for your loss. :(

I also thought about taking the drugs, but i heard that it doesn't guarantee that everything will be expelled. I ended up miscarrying naturally the day before my scheduled D&C but i wanted to make sure that all the tissue was removed so that i could move forward.

I think you have to be prepared to wait if you do it naturally or use the drugs (either way, it's still painful but you can get through it) so that's something to think about.

I hope you figure out the best solution.

I had a D&C, so I'm not much help, but I just wanted to say I'm sorry :( I found out at my first ultrasound at 9 weeks that there was no longer a heartbeat.

I'm hoping to get some insights, as I've found this site to be so helpful and friendly the past few weeks I've been reading.

This morning at what should have been 7 1/2 weeks we found out that our baby didn't have a heartbeat and had stopped growing about a week ago. I'm very upset, but trying to stop crying for a bit because I have some tough decisions to make and I'm hoping you wonderful ladies can help. This is my first time going through this and I feel very empty and lost.

I've been on progesterone suppositories since right after ovulation, so my doctor thinks that once I stop those, I should miscarry naturally. But he also prescribed me Cytotec (Misoprostol) and left the choice up to me. I would really like to avoid a D&C if I can because of past medical issues, so these are my first two options at the moment. But I'm scared. Of everything really, but mostly of the pain from the Misoprostol, since I've just been reading horror stories about it. Although I'm guessing just waiting for it to happen naturally too will involve painful cramps as well. I feel like if I can just get through this with the least amount of physical pain, I can handle the emotional pain, but not both at the same time.

Can anyone please share their experiences, if you had to make a similar choice? I really appreciate it.
