I've tried soooo many sleep remedies...from natural (melatonin, chamomile, valerian root) to homeopathic (Hyland's Calms Forte) to other drugs (Gravol, Unisom). My main issue wasn't falling asleep but waking up in the middle of the night and not being able to fall back asleep. Nothing has really helped (I still wake up but can fall back asleep quicker) except for using white noise. We use a fan.

Oh! And using your bed for sleep only is super important too. I had to stop reading and watching TV in bed since it was telling my brain that it was a place for "fun" rather than just a place to sleep. We have completely removed the TV from our room and I gotta say, that had a HUGE impact.

Melatonin is the best natural sleep aid since it is what your body naturally produces to fall asleep. However, you cannot take it while pregnant and I am not sure about breast feeding. During pregnancy my Dr. has me taking Tylenol PM and it helps. I have a messed up sleep schedule and before I got pregnant, melatonin (which I have only ever seen in pill form and so it is how I take it) was a life saver. For now, I will enjoy my Tylenol PM.

Melatonin, valerian root (the pills smell like feet so yes hold your breath or you can get valerian tea). Several teas are good alone or in combination with the above -- chamomile, valerian, lavender.

@MrsSCB: it does come in pill form, so you don't really ever have to taste it. here's the wiki about it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valerian_(herb)

You sound like my DH. I think that screen time right before bed has a big impact on him. Also, he doesn't go to bed at the same time and wake up at the same time every day. I think that messes with him.

@Foodnerd81: I haven't been to a specialist but I probably should. I used to deal with it ok because I could just stay in bed longer, but since I started having to get up really early about a year ago, it's been affecting me a lot more.

@mrs. bird: haha, thanks for the warning about the smell! Does it come in pill form and does it taste bad too? Not that it would stop me...at this point I'm willing to try anything!

Mr. Bee had a post about sleep issues (for adults) that I thought was helpful. I really think the light from the computer/tv/iphone are definitely bad for sleep but I'm going to guess that wasn't your issue as a child. Melatonin has helped me some.

Have you ever seen a sleep specialist? It sounds like it's a life long issue, so there could be something else up besides just bad sleep habits like watching TV in bed.

valerian root!!!!! some people have good luck with melatonin, but that's usually better for resetting your internal clock for travel etc, but valerian root helps to relax you and let you fall asleep. if you do ever take something stronger, like a benzo, probably not wise to take both as it's been shown to increase your blood serum level of the benzo without decreasing the half life of it (kind of fascinating!). DH have both had great luck taking valerian root, but it smells TERRIBLE so hold your breathe when you open the bottle or it'll scare you away =P

@evansjamie: I think that's something I really need to improve. I usually like to watch TV in bed before I sleep but I bet that's definitely not helping my problem :-/

Something that helps me is to make sure my room is completely dark and quiet. I also read in Body & Soul a few years ago that the electronic devices in our rooms can inhibit good sleep. Once I started leaving my cell phone/iPad in the living room and got an analog alarm clock, I noticed a difference in my sleep habits.

Melatonin naturally occurs with in the body. If you don't produce enough it can effect your sleep. Also eat a banana an hour before bed time. It has melatonin in it as well.

I have always been a bad sleeper. I literally did not know that people could actually sleep through the whole night without waking up until I started dating DH because I never have, not even as a child. I have a pretty tough schedule these days, though (really early wake up) and I'm reaching the end of my rope. I wake up multiple times in the night, often for no reason. Sometimes I have trouble falling back asleep, sometimes not.

I'd rather not depend on sleeping pills like Ambien, etc., so I'm just wondering if anyone has any tips or natural sleep aids you'd suggest?
