@Anagram: I am one of 3 and we are all super different. My oldest brother was the golden child who could do not wrong, my middle brother was the black sheep who was always in trouble, and I was the baby and the only girl and I was spoiled and got away with a lot.

I think it's a pretty good 50/50.

I say 50/50.
My sisters and I are all REALLY different. Parents treated us pretty much the same (small differences here and there).

@Anagram: My mom was harder on me and expected more from me than my sister. My sister got away with SO much stuff that I got in tons of trouble for (or would have at least).

I'd have to say, as an adopted person, I believe it's almost all nurture. Like, 80% at least. I'm nothing like my birth parents, other than appearance.

@boiledpnut: just out of curiosity...how did your parents treat you differently? I find that super interesting. I'm not a twin, but I have 5 siblings and we are all *so* different. We all had the same parents, who raised us all with the same parenting style, but then again...our parents really didn't treat us all just the same. I think they unconsciously (subconsciously?) favored some kids and were harder on other kids (and each parent had their own favorites/harder on kids). Makes me wonder...

I also think nurture is greater. I have an identical twin sister. We grew up in the same environment, but we were definitely treated differently. As adults, we're as different as night and day.

I think nurture is most important. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the vast majority of serial killers/violent criminals come from abusive, messed up families.

maybe i'm the pessimist, but i think nature is much more powerful than nurture. but like mr bee mentioned, you can't change nature, so there's no point on dwelling on that. i think you can overcome nature with a tremendous amount of nuture, but i think generally nature is stronger than nurture.

I know enough adopted kids to know that nurture plays a huge role! Nature is there, but can be shaped to a vast degree. Besides, if nurture is the only thing you can change, why not focus on that aspect. I can't change either of my daughters' genetic input... Only what I do now with them :)

I think it's maybe like 70/30. There are a lot of things that nature determines like temperament, but I think nurture is a bigger part of how children interact with the world. I'm big on teaching my students that they have innate characteristics, but they do have control over themselves & their actions.

What % do you believe is nature vs nurture in regards to child rearing? I tend to lean more towards nature. I try to parent based on my kids' individual personalities vs trying to stick with some sort of schedule or what a book says. I use books as guides but I like to cater to each of my kids' individual personalities.

How about you?
