@macintosh: maybe you can try Unisom in the meantime? I have a friend who took it day and night for nausea, per her doc's instructions. You could try a quarter or half a pill during the day in case it makes you super drowsy. You know, if you're having trouble making it to Friday!

@blackbird: yep, I get carsick too, and I'm the one who has to drive. I wear seabands in the car, but I doubt it's really doing anything.

I called the midwife practice and they fit me in for an appointment on Friday. Better than nothing!

@macintosh: Yeah definitely call them and tell them you have debilitating nausea. And, i'm sure, if you explain your situation with your DH, that you can't just sit on the couch and opt out, that they will either call in a script or have you come in and then write you one. It doesn't make any sense for them not to!

My one thing right now is that i get carsick....and i'm going to be on a plane next month. I plan on getting a script and taking something before I get on the plane. I know that'll be my tipping point.

My OB's philosophy with my first pregnancy was that I needed to preserve any vacation and sick time for post partum and she didn't want me to be out sick with nausea. So thankfully she gave me the prescriptions before I even realized I needed them. She also told me that I didn't earn a badge for braving the yuckies and to just take advantage of modern medicine when I found I needed it.

I hope your midwife practice proves to be helpful.

@MamaG: ah, sound like you had a great OB! I deal with a lot of doctors (more for DH than myself) and I get so frustrated when the give you the runaround. "I can't prescribe that, ask the specialist." Then you call the specialist and they say "oh, you need to come in for that." I feel like half of my copays are paid because doctors don't have time to return phone calls :P

I'll call the midwife practice again. If I can get the chief of neurology to call me after 5 pm, surely someone can help me with this , lol!

I would call the midwife practice and explain to them how you have been feeling and see if they will make an exception to see you earlier or call in a prescription before you are seen.

I've only ever seen my OB during my pregnancy and it was at my first appointment with my first pregnancy (about 7 weeks) that she prescribed me zofran even though I hadn't had any issues at that point. With my second pregnancy I wasn't seen until 10 weeks but when the nausea hit me I just called her nurse and made the zofran request.

Ugh. Well, my doctor got back to me with a resounding NO! She said they normall only give Zofran to women who vomit until they are dehydrated. She also said I'd need to ask my OB anyway, which I don't have one. I have and appointment with a midwife practice next week, which is the earliest they will take me (8 weeks). Great :(

I do feel a little better today, but I was not feeling well yesterday. I'm sure it's not gone. I guess doctors just expect us to deal with it, but i have things to do and I can't get them done.

I had HG and a large part of it is debilitating, unabating nausea, with or without the vomiting- although usually with. If it keeps you from functioning normally, it's not just MS, and the sooner you start to medicate, the better off you'll be. Hang in there, and don't be afraid to ask for zofran.

@macintosh: I was in exactly the same position as you. I brought it up with my midwife and she encouraged me to take diclegis. It's category A, and I'm glad I took it. The midwife and website even have coupons to keep the cost down; I paid $30. But I would've gladly paid more just to be functional again.

Yes don't feel like you have to be some sort of med free hero. Talk to you dr about zofran. I used it on an as needed basis in both pregnancies. Being functional was too important to me.

I second the colace recommendation. I was diligent the first time and never had an issue. The second pregnancy I was not taking it consistently and let's just say it sucked.

Omg guys , I can't say how much I appreciate the support. I took one of DH's 4 mg zofran a few hours ago and I have felt amazing ever since! I feel like a real person! I'm going to definitely call and ask for a script on Monday.

I was already feeling a little guilty about taking medicine bc I have asthma and I am already on 5 scripts, but they are all Category B. I was hoping I wouldn't have to add any more but you guys are right, medicine exists for a reason!

I had the same attitude as you. I had nausea from about 1pm until bedtime. Sometimes I'd throw up, and sometimes not... but I pretty much ended up not feeling like doing anything every day but felt like it was some sort of ridiculous rite of passage or something.

Aaaaaaaannnnnd then my kidneys started being affected, my blood pressure went through the roof and I ended up on bedrest for a week.

Moral of the story, ask for the drugs.

Zofran seriously changed soooo much for me. I don't see any reason to suffer through barely functioning when there is something out there that can help. Just because other people have it harder with morning sickness doesn't make your struggle with it suck any less.

Agree that you should ask now! I didn't take Zofran until 12 weeks or so w/my first pregnancy and spent the entire first tri feeling blah- I would come home from work, take a unisom and sleep. You should for sure try Unisom, btw- when I took it at night I always felt better the next day than on nights I didnt, plus it keeps you from waking up nauseous, unable to go back to sleep. This pregnancy I started Zofran around 6-7 weeks and was able to do so much more and feel better doing it. And I only threw up 3 times, which is a miracle compared w/last time...I can almost always keep from puking if I pop one and do some deep breathing. I hope you feel better soon!

I don't see why you should need to be tough. I took a half a zofran each day in the afternoon and it helped soooo much. The only reason I took 1/2 was because that made the constipation less bad. Ask for it.

@Ms.Badger, @mrsrain: ugh, thank you both! I feel so much better.

@catomd00: aw man, your doctor sounds old school! I wish someone could help with DH, but we have no family in the state and caregivers are expensive! Luckily I only spend about 20 minutes getting him up in the morning and another hour for his nighttime bathroom/shower routine. The hardest thing was making meals 3x a day, but I fixed that but allowing myself to rely on frozen dinners.

I emailed my GP, but I'm sure I won't hear back until next week. I guess I could also ask my RE on Weds. I actually have a few of DH's zofran left from when he had surgery. I guess I could try one to see if it helps.

Sounds like my experience and I didn't ask for medication. When I talked to my doctor about it, he basically said there wasn't anything to do but stick it out. I never asked about Zofran and not sure why he didn't think that was an option…It can't hurt to ask though! It makes for looooong days when you're constantly nauseous. In the interim, are you able to get someone to help care for your husband?

You should definitely talk to your doctor. Zofran made a huge difference for me. Remember, every pregnancy is different just like every mama and baby is different... There is no reason why you should suffer or barely make it through just because someone else has had it worse. Also, my MS just got worse each week, so better to do what you can now in case yours is the same!

I'm 7w1d and I've been having all day nausea for only a week now. I'm lucky that I work from home and I haven't been vomiting too much, but I feel like I'm barely functioning. I have to take care of DH and I'm barely able to do it. I'm nauseated when my stomach is empty and when it's full. Morning, noon, night.

I'm taking B6 on the recommendation of my friend's BF (an OB), but it's not really doing anything. I'd like to ask my doctor about zofran, but I'm feeling like kind of a wimp. I'm sure others have has MS much worse. My pilates teacher told me her horror story of how she vomited 22 times in one day. I feel like I should tough it out, but I'm not feeling very tough right now.

Any suggestions?
