@looch: I wish...5 hours drive...she gets 6 more months of storage in my basement then done!!!

@Greentea: I have one set I am keeping, and I will inherit more when my grandma passes...so I will have some dishes to pass on. But I also dont want to burden my daughters with the guilt of having to say "no mom we dont want them"...you know?

@Alivoo01: I dont know what I was thinking when I took my moms - its not my style at all!!! Its pretty just not my style!!!

@BabyBoecksMom: at least you have the ring though? I do like jewelry as pass downs bc it can be transformed so easily to fit individuals tastes. My grandma has told me she has a sapphire for my DD and I told her "ok but its a large ring so I will be making it a necklace so she can actually wear it while younger"....she was fine with it thankfully!

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: Thats how I feel about the green dishes I am keeping, and a tea set I have already requested whenever my grandma is ready to part with it!

@yoursilverlining: I completely agree....I'd want them used - not just sitting in a basement!!!

@sera_87: seriously...check out this website...the process was SO easy!

i'd just be happy i actually found someone to take them for a decent amount of money, rather than having to drop them off at goodwill or something.

yeah, i'm colder than you, apparently. :silly:

Another vote for checking with family and then selling. I don't think it's cold hearted, and besides, you could always think of it this way: do you think your deceased family members would rather see "their" china sitting boxed up and unused and unloved at your house, or used and loved by someone else?!

I love buying odds and ends of china pieces (platters mostly, and serving dishes) and I like the idea that many families have enjoyed the pieces before me!

With that many sets I'd sell them too. My family doesn't have anything truly heirloom to pass down. I will ingerit my grandma's pink stemware and dessert bowls. They were probably massed produced at the time, but mesmerized me growing up.

I would love to have that problem! lol While I'm always envious of people who have heirloom/antique *anything* to pass down, I do see where you have way more than you would ever need, so I think selling a couple sets would be fine.

I only have one heirloom ring that has was passed down to me... most everything else that we hoped to pass on was stolen or lost in my grandfather's house fire.

If you don't have any uses for them, I say go for it! Doubt your kiddos will either since fine china isn't readily used as it was before. And styles/tastes are always evolving.

@Mrs D: Not cold. I just did the same thing 2 months ago. We had 4 sets of China. I kept my grandmothers china and that was it. I live right by replacements so I took it into them. You can do an online quote and they will tell you exactly how much they are offering for your set. Shipping would be expensive if they aren't offering a lot though.

I would sell them. De-cluttering is the way to go. Trying to go through my parents stuff now is a nightmare - they kept way to much stuff over the years and my siblings and I don't want a lot of it. It is better to keep it simple now and not have to deal with having too much down the road - especially when those items are not being used.

If you're at all sentimental about any of them, you could also considering keeping just one or two pieces from the sets you get rid of so you can still hand something down to your kids but don't have to keep entire sets.

It's totally normal in my family to have some random serving pieces and bowls that match nothing but that are special because they were heirlooms.

@MaryM: we have someone in my family like that too....problem is she is dumb about stuff and doesnt check value first. She tried to sell a pair of candlesticks she had been gifted at a garage sale for $10/pair. Turns out they were silver candlesticks that my grandmother had received as a wedding gift from her grandma....worth way more than $10 not counting sentimental value. Thank god my mom saw and took them...WTF!!!!! I have consulted family and no one wants them!

@birdofafeather: I have two sisters...one has said "no" to everything. The other (the one I am holding the other set for) said she'd love the China but no room. So I feel I have covered my bases.

@SugarplumsMom: I am too - and honestly it is sad for me to think about selling them but seriously I would rather they get use. Plus I am keeping the one set. I dont think I could bring myself to do it with out the motivation of the pieces I plan to buy...

@nana87: She has always complained that she doesnt have room for it - in actuality its her husband who is a clutter freak - he wont let her have them. Which is funny...bc if my husband knew what I was storing for her it would be WW3.

@LBee: There are still a handful of sets from my grandma that will be offered up...so we still have choices. Plus my mom has 2 sets still...(3 girls in our family).

I agree that I'd ask family members before selling it.

I got my grandmother's china, well, half of it. Half went to my cousin whose wife is known for selling heirlooms out from under him because she simply doesn't want them. I have a terrible fear of her selling the other half of my grandmother's china when I could very well use it to finish out my set.

but if no one else in the family wants it, by all means sell.

I don't think you're being cold, esp if you don't want them! Maybe offer the other sets to your sister before you sell them? And also, tell her to take her own dishes, sounds like she has space to store them! And I say that as a person whose brother is storing a bunch of my crap including my grandparents' china :silly: (though to be fair, I live in a tiny apt in a different state, and he bought my parents' house where it was already being stored)

i think the one set that you have from grandma qualifies as heirloom! i would ask your sister (or any other siblings) about your mom and dad's china before you sell though, just in case! and definitely offload the ones you're already holding for your sister! 2500 sq ft is plenty of room!

Nope, don't think you're being cold at all. How many heirlooms can one person have?
My mother hoards great-great everybody's everything and then complains about how she has too much stuff and is overwhelmed.
Anything truly sentimental that I feel bad about selling/donating I would see if there's anyone in the family or a close friend that would like it first but if not, away it goes!

I live in a 700sf city townhouse and have to be practical about the items I keep. I try not to keep anything that I don't use.
