Following, my 2 year old can open our main door. We live in an apartment so it doesn't let her outside but obviously we don't want her wandering the building either. We are not allowed to add a chain/or bolt. It's not an issue at night yet for us but will be when she eventually potty trains.

Thanks for the suggestions so far! We have a bi-level house. We took down the baby gates as she figured out how to get those open. My husband works a different shift, so I can't lock him out with a chain or bolt. I'll have to look into the wireless door alarms, sounds interesting.

@gingerbebe: Yes to the wireless door alarms! We have them on our doors, and my husband has set them up on our home monitoring system to tell us if a door is opened.

Look for wireless door alarms. If you have the doors on a different floor, I would look at baby gates that lock for the stairs OR a doorbell chime extender (if basically broadcasts the bell upstairs). The alarms will go off until the door is shut, so if you combine a wireless door alarm with a privacy chain, that should prevent a 4 year old and alert you.

We have a single story ranch and my son can open all the doors and we lock him into this room right now but once he potty trains we need to keep his access to the bathroom so we have been researching!

Can you install a bolt lock or chain up high at the top of the doors as a backup?

Put a chain or a bolt lock on, higher up where she can't reach.

My 4 year old knows how to lock/unlock our doors that go to the exterior doors (front door and door to the garage). We've talked about her about not touching the locks, but I still worry. Especially at night time, what if she tries to go outside? Does anyone have any suggestions of how we can prevent her from opening the doors on her own?

Thanks in advance for the help!
