I loathe united, so I will do whatever I could not to give them my business. It sucks because I was very loyal to continental.

@ElbieKay: Didn't they keep the planes marked Continental and the a lot of the same staff though? It's possible it was US Air rather than Continental.

@78h2o: @lemondrop: @ElbieKay: yikes! I've flown united several times, and tons of times when it was continental, but never with a baby. I hope if we do use them that it isn't horrible :(

@yoursilverlining: I had no idea they do that, that's great to know, I definitely would have been a bit surprised!

@78h2o: Continental is now United.

Earlier this year I watched a United agent give a family of four a terrible time and not allowing them to board early. I was shocked.

I hate connecting flights, so I would go for the nonstop. You never know of there is going to be a hassle with delays.

@lemondrop: Ugh, that sucks! They totally let me board early and moved people so I had an empty seat next to me. However, they've pissed me off for other (non-baby related things) in the past. Continental has been the best so far, as they let me take her carrier on for no charge since the flight wasn't full.

@yoursilverlining: omg, this happened to me and I tested positive?! What the heck!? I had to take LO out and send the carrier though the scanner about 4x and then they took us into a private room and did a pat down of me and the baby!!! They were very professional about it and all, but it took about 20 minutes! So annoying. I am totally going to avoid wearing her next time through security.

Option A. The two hour layover will give you time to do diapers, bathroom for yourself, and stretch your legs and you'll be off again before you know it. To me it beats having the extra 4 hour drive that option B would give you.

Option B.

I just had the absolute worst experience of my life flying United. They were horrible when it came to flying with a young child. They don't let you board early, and the flight attendants were rude and not even remotely helpful. One gave us 3 lectures about what a terrible job we were doing parenting. Never again flying with them, I've had good experiences flying most of the other airlines with a baby.

We've flown a bunch with LO and personally I prefer a non-stop flight. Layovers can break up good behavior/nap momentum...but I also wouldn't want a 2 hour drive after. I think the layover would be the lesser of two evils, so to speak.

FYI, if you baby wear through security (like, actually wear your LO through the metal detector), they will have to swipe your hands to test for bomb residue. It's no big deal, but i didn't know about it ahead of time and was surprised the first time we flew!

Another vote for A (unless option B is significantly cheaper). I don't think SW is particularly baby friendly, or at least any more baby friendly than United. I've flown both and both were fine... with SW you don't get an assigned seat, but you can board after the A group. If I remember correctly, you can board right after first class on United, but you have an assigned seat anyway... I actually prefer to board last as long as I have a seat.

Option A! I much prefer shorter flights with layovers rather than long non-stop flights with a baby. A short drive home at the end of your trip is another bonus!

@luckypenny: @plantains: I think I agree. Driving two hours with her sounds daunting as it is. It would be nice to only have a ten min drive home after!

The two flights mostly because of the journey back. I wouldn't want to have a 2 hour drive ahead of me after landing.

The two flights. When we did our first flight to South Carolina from California we decided we would fly to Charlotte, NC and drive the rest of the way (2+ hrs). While DD slept most of the ride home, it was exhausting and especially going back home knowing we had to drive was really tiring.

Your first flight out will be super short and you guys can eat and let LO crawl around during layover. Now that I've flown with DD a bunch, it's not as scary as I thought it was

So DH and I decided that our first vacay with LO will be to either Orange County or San Diego in March. I'm starting to put together flight costs, and have come up with two different options. Both of these options have the same flight cost, the only difference is the city and incidental costs like gas + parking. The flight time from Houston to OC or San Diego is 3+ hours.

Option A: Fly out of our small, local airport, and connect in Houston. This option has us flying United.

Pros:
Don't have to pay for gas to Houston or parking at airport.
Shorter security lines
Wouldn't be in car for 2 hours before flight

Cons:
Have to change planes in Houston
2 hour layover
Don't get into city until late afternoon

Option B: Drive to Houston and fly Southwest
Pros:
1 non-stop flight
Get into city in the morning

Cons:
Pay for parking, gas
Two hour drive there and back after flight

If you were traveling with an 8-9 month old, which would you pick? I'm not sure the 2 hour layover is a con, because I could use that time to feed her, change her, etc. I don't mind the drive to Houston if the non-stop flight would be significantly easier OR if Southwest is more baby-friendly than United. The other factor here is commuter flights between Houston and my city fill up very fast, so I'd have to book option A in the next couple of months, while I have several months to book option B.
