@MrsJBeeG: Yea she has been whining SO much more. I really don’t want her to be upstairs as she sheds like crazy, but if this keeps up I might have to just try having her closer.

@graceandjoy: In people it's called "sundowning" when they get really confused in the evening/night, and I think pups do the same thing.

@graceandjoy: I was going to say is it the start of doggie dementia? Our sweet pup got it really badly at 15 years old, it just got worse and worse to where I was waking up so many times at night. It was like she forgot everything and would be standing and staring at nothing while whining. It was such a tough road with her - I didn’t find a fix other than having her sleep with me to calm her.

@pinkcupcake: she doesn’t sleep through. she uses the pee pad at night. we did bloodwork within the last 3 months and she had a clean bill of health 😔 but who knows maybe something changed...

@MenagerieMama: You know I wouldn’t be surprised. Like maybe she doesn’t even know it’s night time anymore. Like we feed her and then she acts like we didn’t!

@graceandjoy: I think senior dogs can get dementia :crying: we have 4 pets and one of our dogs is almost 11 so we will be in the same boat soon. I would talk to your vet to see if there are any meds that can help.

If she used to be able to sleep through the night without getting up multiple times to pee, it could be kidney issues. I’d get full blood work done, especially on an older dog, to rule out any illness that could be causing this.

@BUNBUN: No the pee pads isn't the issue. We've used them in conjunction with going outside since she was a puppy with no issues. And I don't think it's an UTI issue, b/c I usually put 2 out and I've seen different spots on the pee pad meaning she knows to go on it multiple times, but now sometimes the pad is completely dry. I think she is like a kid, she knows I'll let her out if she whines/bark.

@fmmtk: I will def watch out for an UTI; tho I don't think this is the issue (for now anyway, see above reply). I really think she is old and is just used to getting whatever she wants :meh: Like hey! I want to take a stroll at 3am and mom will let me out if I whine!

Our almost 15 year old has similar behaviors and we have found confinement to work. She has her bed and bowls set-up in the bathroom and if she's having a tough night we just close the door and she settles down. We constantly have to remind ourselves of her senior status, because it is tough!

I second @bunbun on getting her checked for a UTI. We just found out our girl has a very severe UTI and our only indication was her going to the bathroom a lot (and we just chalked that up to her getting older - so much guilt over ignoring it).

This is so hard, because you trained her *not* to go in the house, so that might be why she doesn't want to use the pee pads...
Have you had her checked out for a UTI? I would start there and see what the vet says
Otherwise, I would look for something a little more structured than a pee pad (think: litter box, but for apartment dogs) and give her treats when she uses it successfully. Be prepared that she might never want to pee outside again, ha!

My dog is 14 (I think), as she can't really hold it all the time, we always leave a pee pad out when we're not home/for overnight.

Anyway, for the past month or so, I don't know what her problem is! She has woken me up at 3am, 5am, and usually again just before 7am to go out. She isn't allowed upstairs, so she stands by the stairs and whines. If I don't come down, she barks, so usually I jump out of bed hearing her whine to avoid waking the kids up. Girls room have loud white noise on but still! If she keeps barking, it will wake them up.

Mind you I'm in my 3rd tri and already not sleeping well so this is REALLY not working for me. DH is currently stuck in the girls room, but it's not like I want ANYONE to be getting up MOTN for the dog! We love her endlessly and she is already spoiled rotten, but she has the pee pads!

I was jokingly saying I should get a muzzle for overnight, but in my sleep deprived pregnant stage, I don't know if I'm really joking. Would that be cruel?! Do I try to let her "bark it out" and let her realize no one is coming to let her out?
