when we started purees, we mixed some tahini in--it has a good amount of calories. i still use it to help make pureed vegetables more palatable to him, like green beans and spinach.

i have no idea how much i'm supposed to feed LO. i'm sticking with the "food under 1 is just for fun" MO for now but i know at some point i have to get a little more strategic about things.

@Mrs Green Grass: my 16 month old only weighs about 21lbs or so, she eats like a horse and still doesnt gain much. If the doctor isnt worried about your LO's weight I would try to to worry too much

@Mrs Green Grass: FWIW, DD has always been in the 50% for weight, but her weight really slowed down around that time. I think she only gained 1 lb between her 9 and 12 month appts, but the doctor wasn't too worried because she was so active. If you're worried about the weight gain, I would stick to breastmilk first, then offer solids as a supplement, since he'll get a lot more calories from it.

@littlebug: His curve does mirror the actual curve which means it's flattening out. I was hoping he would continue to go up so he can cross it. My Ped is not "concerned" but wishes it would be higher.

@littleveesmommy: I mostly don't worry...but every once in awhile... And when I do freak out and post about it, I hear all these other stories about little babies and it calms me for a few more months. : )

DD was born at 41 weeks and continues to be on the low end for weight - she finally broke 20 lbs at her 18 month visit! I know it's harder said than done but if your LO is eating well and developing well, then maybe don't worry about the weight too much? At one point DD was -1% on the weight chart and it was very hard not to freak but my ped said not to worry. She now loves to eat and is climbing on the chart so it might just be the way she grows. Also, 14 lbs for 7.5 month adjusted age is pretty good - I think DD was 14.5 at her 9 month well visit. Keep up the good work momma!

D could definitely not finish an entire pouch! He eats about 1-2 ounces per feeding. Everything I've heard is that "food before one is just for fun," so I try not to let it stress me out too much. D is on the small side of the curve, so sometimes I worry he's not getting enough, but the pediatrician has assured us that as long as he stays on the SAME curve, she won't be concerned about it. It may be different with a preemie, but I don't know.

No matter what, though, you are doing a GREAT job with D!

@Mrs. Jacks: I'm definitely trying to focus on milk first. Do you think two times a day is more appropriate right now? How do you feel about peanut butter now. I'm kind of inclined to try it sooner than later. We have no allergies and I've read that age doesn't really change the chances of an allergy? I'll wall you too...

@Mrs Green Grass: I can't imagine how stressful this must be. I've seen your posts here and there and you have been through so much having a 25 weeker! You're a supermom :)

I don't have personal experience with this but my 11 month old very rarely finishes a whole pouch.

We had a tiny and she refused all solids until a year. I feel like she got more calories from my breast milk than any solids that she might play with. So I would calculate all her calories from milk and then allow any solids to just be additive. At his corrected age, I think you are getting too much pressure for solids. Feel free to wall me for more detail.

I really would not expect him to be doing much with solids right now.

We're at 9 months and LO is only 14 lbs or so, so I hear you. She doesn't like avocado, and I found a 9% Greek yogurt that she likes, but it gives her a rash, so I've stopped that till we see the dr next week. I gave her scrambled egg this week, and she cant get enough! Loves it! I'm on the hunt for more high fat/calorie foods for her...she's not eating a whole pouch yet at this point either, except very ocasionally.

@mamimami: LOL @ mofos

@Mrs Green Grass: I know I've posted to you before with empathy after watching my preemie niece struggle with eating/weight gain - not sure if you're comfortable trying peanut butter? That is very high calorie and I know my niece ate (and still eats) a lot of that.

I don't have this problem, but I did somewhat recently make a high-fat snack my kid liked :) I just mashed up yams (in your case you could use squash) with banana, some baby cereal and egg yolk, formed patties and fried those mofos in coconut oil. They seemed pretty fattening and she liked them :) They were VERY sweet.

(My lo was born at 25 weeks and is now 11 months actual, 7 1/2 adjusted. We started solids at 5 1/2 months adjusted, so 2 months ago. He has always been first percentile on the growth chart for actual and adjusted ages, but the goal is for him to catch up eventually. His length and head circ are both barely on the actual chart, but that it pretty good.)

At our Ped appt yesterday, D only weighed 14 pounds when I was really hoping he would hit 15. At his last appt. 6 weeks ago, he was 13lb5oz.) I was pretty disappointed since this is the lowest gain so far. He typically gains 3/4lb a month.

He has reflux although it seems pretty well controlled on meds right now. Eating has always been a struggle, but he's made huge progress. He currently averages about 22 ounces a day (half formula, half breast milk - both fortified to 24 calories) and is eating about 4-5 ounces of solids a day. I spend pretty much all of my time thinking about and planning and working on getting him to eat. He eats every 2-4 hours (STTN with dreamfeed at 10, wakes at 6:30) and still gets bottles before solids.

For a typical solids meal, he'll eat half a pouch of something and a plum teething wafer. We do some whole foods too. He doesn't mind chewing and doesn't really like smooth foods. I've tried avocado and yogurt, but he's not really a fan. I want to start incorporating more olive oil and butter or greek yogurt into some of our foods. I have a nanny who can help with cooking if necessary, but right now he mostly gets pouches. The times I've cooked, he hasn't eaten it and it's been really frustrating.

His current favorite food is butternut squash, but he also really likes the Plum, Berry, Barley pouch.

I just want advice or commiseration or both. I just want to make sure every food I introduce has at least as many calories as BM (for us 24/ounce) or else it doesn't seem worth it. What worked for your littler babies? (My BFF's daughter is the same age as my lo and polishes off two pouches in 10 minutes...8 OUNCES! I want to hear from the other half...)
