@FLnative12: just a heads up but reflux meds can sometimes take a week or more for you to see the effects so don't count it out if you don't see a difference in a couple days.

Thank you for the replies! Went to the Ped this morning. They want me to try Zantac for a few days and if there is no improvement then try nutramigen and see if that does it.

I am hoping the Zantac handles the issue, since then I could continue to pump and feed breast milk. If the nutramigen is the answer I will have to re-evaluate because I don't know that an elimination diet will be a feasible option for me.

However it turns out I am just wanting some relief for my baby! I hate seeing her in pain.

The one streak of blood sounds more like a fissure from constipation than an intolerance to me (not a doctor). Have you ever tried probiotics? My second baby was super fussy but giving her a little probiotics daily seemed to really help. I would try something like that before stopping breastfeeding or doing an extreme elimination diet. And yeah, ask your pediatrician.

Lots of great advice re: feeding. My LOs were very gassy and we used the Windi (by the Nose Frida people). It worked much better than gripe water. I was very hesitant to use it at first, but got desperate and bought it and it was a game changer for us.

Going cold turkey from breastmilk to formula could definitely be causing a lot of discomfort for her, even if she doesn't have an intolerance. If she does have an intolerance, using a dairy based formula will be even worse.

I would go back to 100% breastmilk, and start an elimination diet to cut dairy and soy and give it 3-4 weeks and see if she improves.

The gentlease is still a milk based formula, so if she had a true intolerance, then that formula wouldn't solve that problem.

Your ped will be able to help you determine if this is a true intolerance, or reflux, or normal underdeveloped gut.

My daughter'a mspi got much worse when we tried to switch to formula (lots more cowsmilk protein in most formula than the small amount that gets into your breastmilk). I would talk to your ped before making any big changes. We eventually had to switch to nutramigen which made a huge difference but that was only after a definitive diagnoses (lots of blood in stool)

My guess is that it's a soy and dairy allergy. Are her poops slimy and lime green? I'd continue to pump and cut out all dairy and soy. I would not feed her formula (my ped said it was better to nurse through when your body was detoxing). Give in 2 weeks and see how she's doing.

She may outgrow it before you have to toss your milk. I personally had to donate about 1000 ounces due to multiple food allergies, but LO is so much happier now it is not a problem

I would head to the pediatrician. First, they can test the poop to see if there is a milk allergy. If you're seeing blood that could be it...

It could also be reflux.

I wouldn't totally give up on the breast milk until you meet with your ped... also, it's only been a day, so if you do want to test whether it's breast milk vs formula you probably need to give it more time.

Also, around this time with my babies, especially my now-one-year-old, I noticed some increase in fussiness and extra grunting. I remember doing some gripe water, but ultimately I think it was a phase. At 3 weeks old the baby's digestive tract is still getting settled.

But yeah - i'd bring her in to make sure she doesn't have reflux or an issue with a milk (or other) allergy.

Hang in there mama!

I would mark the frozen milk bags with a red star, or something similar to mark that they cause a problem. But keep them!

Start going dairy free, soy free. It will take about 2 - 4 weeks to get the dairy and soy out of your milk. Keep feeding her your milk, and once you see improvement, stop the special marking on your milk bags.

This sounds like a possible mspi situation, so read up! Don't throw out that milk, because you might need it! My daughter outgrew her mspi at 3.5 months, and I used my older stash just fine once she was cleared.

Help! I will make this as organized as possible, but please excuse the length - I am deep in the throes of newborn sleep deprivation and probably over thinking this.

DD is 3 weeks old as of yesterday. Due to some latch issues I have been EP since we got home from the hospital, with a great supply and a decent little freezer stash already built up. I feel like she is having a hard time digesting the milk, but does not have all of the symptoms of an actual intolerance.

Reasons I think there is no problem:
- Gaining weight well - born at 8lb10oz and already 9lb1oz at 2 week check up with all 'normal' diaper patterns
- Sleeping decently well for a newborn, generally pretty relaxed, we could put her down awake and let her drift off to sleep on her own initially, that has since changed.

Reasons I think there is a problem:
- We have progressed from what I consider normal grunt/squirm activity prior to pooping to full blown screaming/straining seems to be in pain.
- One poop diaper has a tiny streak of blood in it.I probably would not have seen it if I wasn't looking for it.
- Tummy is bloated/hard and I can hear gas moving around/bubbling/gurgling. She has suddenly woken up from a deep sleep screaming our of nowhere.

What I have done so far:
- Gas drops. They helped, maybe? I don't know.
- After a few hours of screaming and not sleeping in her normal pattern last night, I decided to try a couple days of formula feeding to see if there is any improvement. I have a can of Enfamil Gentlease and as of 11pm last night that's what she has been eating. How long do you think it would take to see enough to know if this is the answer?

She already seems more comfortable, but we had one screaming giant poop episode this morning, which I think is the breast milk from yesterday exiting. Some squirming/grunting but a lot less spit up, and a 4 hour stretch of sleep last night! I think she was tired from the hours of crying :(

So - the question is what do I do with the 100oz I already have frozen? Is this something she might grow out of and I could try the BM in a month or two? I am still pumping, should I start to wean? How do I know if the gentlease is ok for her - for whatever reason I am having such a hard time distinguishing between 'normal' newborn fussiness and pain/discomfort she is having that I may be able to fix.

I know this is long and all over the place, but feedback is appreciated. I never had to deal with any of this with DS four years ago. Thank you!
