@mamabolt: We are actually using those now. We love them! But I know her pediatrician will tell us to stop, because using them for too long creates an overbite.

Nuk makes a soft spouted sippy cup, perhaps that could help the transition away from bottle?

@BabyTsMom: It certainly would be nice to not have to spend so much on milk every week!

@MAMAG: It would be a rough weekend for sure, but I'm wondering if that's what we'll have to do, since daycare doesn't seem too keen on being the guinea pigs on this one (they're the ones who give her daytime bottles). LO usually eats about 2 hours before bedtime, and then gets a bottle about an hour before. We may have to start doing a "snack" instead.

@Tanjowen: Thanks for this! That's a good idea to just eliminate one bottle at a time. We will have to try that.

@HappyBaker: You're so right. I look back at the stuff I've worried over and shake my head. Doesn't stop me from repeating the habit, though! Lol.

Thankfully, we've made it through the transition from formula to milk okay. Her doc only wants her drinking 12oz of milk a day (she's a little chunk), and I totally agree with that. So, yeah it was tough going from 28oz to 12oz!

I don't believe there is any harm in hard spouted cups. I can't say that I've done any research though. It's what we used for both of my girls and what our daycare uses as well. At 19 months my girl is still struggling with straw cups and honestly, I don't care that much and still give her cups she can use.

As far as advice on weaning, we went pretty much cold turkey with both girls. My girl 19 month old doesn't drink a lot of milk, and often will request wa-wa. She loves cheese and yogurt so I try not to worry about it too much.

I can't speak to nighttime as we don't offer anything at night. Typically the last thing our toddler gets to drink is at dinner time. She goes to be within an hour after eating.

@magnoliamama42: I stressed out about it too but it was fine. We did exactly what @Tanjowen did. Cut out the two daytime ones and replaced w the cup. Kept the morning bedtime one for another month or so then got rid of those one by one. Also, during the day I tried to feed him more solids so he wouldn't feel hungry.
Oh, and he's never gone back to drinking as much milk as he did before. When he was for LO age, it was about 16oz a day. He only drinks about 4-5 oz a day now.

We weaned down starting at 12 months. We were on 4 bottles a day, and I cut out the middle 2 over the period of a month (kept the morning and evening bottle) and offered milk in a straw cup. Then I took away the morning bottle, and the night time bottle was the very last we kept for comfort. The nighttime bottle finally went away around 14 months. The more comfortable he got used to using a straw cup over the 2 month period, the easier it became to transition him, and my LO loooooooved his bottles. His milk intake did go down, which is why we kept the night bottle, and I made sure to offer more cheese and yogurt during the day to make up for it. Good luck!

@magnoliamama42: I stressed over this so much and we switched around the same time. DS still hadn't figured out straw cups, so we just switched cold turkey to the Take & Toss hard spout sippy cups. He was OBSESSED with his bottles so I really didn't think he'd be okay with a hard spout, but he did so good and we never looked back.

Now we do water in straw or open cups and milk in the hard spout ones. He isn't sipping on them all day so I'm not really worried about the speech development thing.

He definitely got a LOT hungrier though since he isn't drinking even half of what he was before (he was drinking an obscene amount of milk still!) But it's been good because now he eats more regular food happily because he's hungry at meal times.

Good luck, I like to always remind myself that as with all challenges in parenting, this will be over in a month or two and you will probably forget it even happened / was a big deal!

@BabyTsMom: We use the same cup. Did he seem hungrier/crankier because he wasn't drinking as many calories? How did y'all overcome that?

We skipped sippy cups altogether and went straight to straw cups. There was a definite transition period where LO's intake went down as he got used to it. We have had a lot of success with the Munchkin weighted straw cup. It allows your LO to hold it at an angle and still be able to drink from it, kinda like a bottle. We still use it now for his milk although I think he'd be fine without it. (He's 2). @magnoliamama42:

LO is 14.5 months old. We have her 15m checkup in a week and a half. And I just *know* that her pediatrician is going to get on us for still using a bottle. I need some advice, because everything out there is so conflicting.

Right now, LO drinks milk out of bottles & soft-spouted sippy cups. She also gets a bottle of water at bedtime or MOTN wakings to help soothe.

She will drink water from a straw cup and a hard-spouted sippy cup throughout the day, but she refused to drink milk from them.

My first reaction is to force the hard spouted sippy cup, since I feel like that would the easiest transition for her. But then I read those aren't good because they can potentially (though not necessarily) cause speech development issues. But, y'all, how do I get her to just use a straw cup when she is so used to the calming effect of the soft spouts and bottles? And I can't get her to use the 360 - I have no idea how to teach her to use it. Any tips on that would be great, too.

Any advice? What did you do? What did your pediatric dentists/pediatricians recommend?

I missed the memo on starting sippy cups and transitioning off the bottle early on, so we are behind the curve on this one.
