When I get the mail I weed out all the junk mail first. Coupons go in a basket in the kitchen or in my purse if I will use them that week. Bills go on top of the keyboard by my husbands computer since he pays them all online. He uses his computer every night pretty much so he'll pay them before doing anything else. Sometimes I tape them to his monitor too as a friendly reminder;)

We just have a basket in our kitchen, and in that basket is a giant chip clip type thing - anything that needs to be paid/processed gets clipped together and I look at them again on Saturday mornings. Anything that just needs to be filed stays in the basket until it looks shameful and overflowing and I go file it all.

Great suggestions! We struggle with the same thing! There are only 2-3 bills we actually get in the mail so we kinda look out for those. But then there are other ones that we miss that surprise us. We tried to have a basket to catch it all, but the basket was always filled with junk or just other paper that we needed to keep and file.

Here is my filing resolution:
1. Clean out filing drawer.
2. File things in basket that need to be filed
3. Find/buy a small basket that holds 3-4 pieces of mail that will be obvious when it needs to be paid.
4. Immediately throw out or file anything after it has been taken care of!

Ooooh, I love this topic! We have 2 small-ish wire baskets, from amazon, one for "important/bills" mail and one for "everything else/magazines" mail.

We have a small thing that just divides mail into two slots, it's not much but if its all in one designated spot, it doesn't get lost.

This is our little system...it says "to file" and "to do", from Marshall's so it was a quick, inexpensive fix to our pile.

Hang in there, you guys certainly have enough stress with NICU life! This is the only way I can manage bills without having utilities shut off or late fees:

http://www.skymall.com/shopping/detail.htm?pid=204042659&c=11034

I pass by it daily and see what is coming up due. It also has a drawer for stamps and the checkbook, which I tend to lose easily.

This is our solution using some Pottery Barn bins. We each have our own bins for random things, random mail things we both need to look at and then our bills bin which gets cleaned out on a weekly basis.

We just have a couple trays on the desk by our entry way. I throw important stuff in one and not so important stuff in the other. I try and toss junk when it comes in.

@Mrs Green Grass: check out some antique shops or a tj maxx. Sometimes they have a cool mail system for much cheaper than pottery barn.

We already auto pay everything that we can (I think). But this makes it even harder to remember the stuff that isn't like car registration, etc...

We also never consolidated duties. Mr. GG always paid what he's always paid. I've wanted to take over for awhile, but I'm not much better than him (although I have never come even close to having something shut off!).

I agree that setting phone alerts will help a lot.

I'm finding some really cool ideas on Pinterest. Of course the best system is by Pottery Barn and would cost like $300 for what I want!

I pay all bills online. As soon as the bill comes in, I pay it online (or schedule to pay it). That way if I ever wonder if something is paid, I can just look up the transaction history.

We are so bad with mail, especially bills. Only thing that has helped was to automate all of our payments online. Or, if not possible, put the paper mail on top of the computer or somewhere conspicuous so we either have to deal with it, or at least keep noticing it bc we have to keep moving it, lol.

I always put the mail in my purse and open it at work where I know I will have time to sit down and pay the bill. I keep file folders in my desk there and shred what I don't need to keep. Anything that needs to come home goes back in the purse and eventually ends up where it needs to go.

This is something I struggle with. What's helped so far is that I get most of bills through email. Then, when I open them, I immediately make a calendar date and set an alert to remind me. I'm not good about paper mail as evidenced by the fact that I'm cleaning up mail off our dining room table from September 2012. : /

I came home today (from the NICU) to find that my water was shut off!! OMG. This is 100% Mr. GG's thing, but we both have issues keeping track of important mail. We open it. Put it on the pool table or counter. Then it gets moved by the cleaning lady...
We lose important things.

I need a system to hold important mail (and yes I realize I should just pay things immediately when I open them, but that's too many steps ahead of where I am at).. But then I also want to keep coupons and some of the other random stuff that comes.

What system do you use? What can I buy to help?
