Oh, I really, really sympathise. We've been having a rough time with our LO, too. Then two nights ago, it magically got better (but for how long?!).

There's a blog post on here talking about the ideal time to sleep train - and the best time is 5.5 months, apparently. So it would be a great time to do it, if that's the route you want to go down!

@ShootingStar: Oye. This sounds like where we were a couple of weeks ago. I'm sorry you're going through this...there's nothing worse than sleep deprivation.

Our son (6.5 months), had only given us 4 hour stretches a handful of times and had been going to bed at 7:30, waking up at 10:30 to nurse, then would be up every 40 minutes between 12 and 4am, screaming for an hour somewhere in there. Then he would join us in bed at 4 and snooze while nursing until 7:30. It.was.miserable.

We ended up getting a personalized sleep plan from the Sleep Baby Site, as we really wanted to avoid straight up CIO unless nothing else worked. We bulked up his daytime feeds, broke his sleep associations (swaddle, paci, nursing, and rocking to sleep), and we put him down drowsy but awake with his lovey. Consistency was key, and they helped us with a daily, step-by-step plan. Two weeks later, he rarely cries when he goes to sleep and he's sleeping from 7:30, getting a 10:30 dream feed, is up at 12ish and 4ish for nursing, and is up for the day at 7:30. While I'm not totally satisfied with this schedule, I'm thrilled that he can fall asleep successfully on his own, and only seems to really wake up when he's hungry (not nursing for comfort anymore). We're working on nap training right now, then we'll work on taking out the midnight or 4am feed.

If he is able to get to sleep initially on his own, I'd keep going with that, and only feed him after three hours. The rest of the time, just attempt to resettle him the same way you do with the initial nighttime routine. It might be a crummy few days, but he'll catch on. Honestly, being 100% consistent and committed is what has been working for us.

While I wish the Sleep Baby Site responded to emails and questions more quickly, I did really appreciate their help. I loved the step by step plan they provided for my sleep deprived brain, and they really will customize the approach to your values.

Whatever you end up doing, I hope that you get more sleep soon and that you can begin to feel sane again. You're not alone, mama.

Boooo, sorry, lady. :(

Our sleep blowwwwws (who knew, right?! ;) ) and like I've said, were just waiting for her cold to clear and to get the ok from the pedi that her ear infection is gone so we can sleep train.

I've read way too much about CIO and while it is helpful for LO to learn to fall asleep at bedtime alone, it sounds like it carries over for wakings too--obviously you still do CIO/checks for their night wakings. From everything I've read/heard, it usually knocks night wakings down pretty quick! Hoping it isn't just wishful thinking! ;)

Hoping you get better sleep soon!!

I think you could try CIO soon but I really wouldn't do it while LO has a cold. I don't always sleep well with a cold and neither does my 19 month old. That's a long time to have a cold too, so I can see why you're needing some rest! I think get all the help you can for now, and see if at the end of the cold things improve. Also is your LO just fussing, just waking up, or crying hysterically? If its just fussing or laying awake, I wouldn't do much of anything. We also ha success with the paci (soothie) so if you want to keep trying that it can help, maybe along with a lovey.

D turns 5 months this week and we're struggling with his sleep and I'm not sure what to do next. He fall asleep pretty easily, but he has a rough time with MOTN wakings. I used to nurse him to sleep, but this week I changed up our routine a little and have been nursing him in a chair instead of lying down and putting him in his crib tired but awake. Most nights he has fallen asleep on his own, twice I had to put my hand on his chest and shush him and give him the pacifier, and then he fell asleep.

But he's gotten into an awful habit of waking some time from 11-11:30. And then every 1.5-3 hours after that. So we generally have wake ups at 11, 2, 3:30, 5, 6, 7, up for the day at 8. We try giving him the pacifier instead of feeding at wake ups, but it doesn't always work. I know he can sleep longer stretches, he used to 5-6, and he has done 8 a couple times.

So at this point I'm not sure what to do. I hear people talk about sleep training and it seems to be mostly for getting baby to sleep at bed time. If we do some type of CIO or modified CIO, will that help with the night wakings? Should just keep working on drowsy but awake at bed time?

He's had a pretty bad cold for most of the last month, and I'm not sure how much of this I should chalk up to that and just wait it out.

But I need to start getting some sleep soon. I woh, and I worry about driving sleep deprived and my work is starting to suffer.
