@MamaCate: I think trying to get him down by the clock is a great idea. I'll definetly start trying that. He gives so little in the way of sleep cues...I never thought about using the clock.

He does nap in the moby when I use it. He slept twice in it yesterday (one of his random sleep-all-day days), because I grocery shopped and cooked dinner with him in it. So I can try upping the usage of it, too. Believe me, I'm very flexible when it comes to where he sleeps at the moment.

@runsyellowlites: I watched that video the other day when you posted it. He has yet to make any such sleepy noise. In fact he pretty much just makes the burp noise and the lower gas noise all day. And he'd be perfectly happy on my left shoulder having his back patted most of the day. He seriously hates any form on gas. It's a major part of the problem, I think. Just hoping once he gets out of the digestive issues, he'll start sleeping better.

@Sammyfab: He's pretty content most of the day, but gets fussy in the evenings. I've heard that's just typical baby behavior, though, so I'm not sure of its from being tired. Its during those hours that colic is most present, so maybe it is a touch of that. He isn't crying though; just super cranky/fussy.

OMG I was feeling sorry for us because M is a really fussy baby and gets maybe 11hrs average a day. She hardly naps during the day but at night at least she has gotten a lot better. I can usually depend on 2hr between feedings.
She's really gassy as well and mylicon seems to have helped.

She yawns all day long almost but I agree that rather than look for cues to start putting them down after 1-1.5 hrs. I really enforced that with my mom the last few days and it seems to have helped daytime napping. Or its a fluke and she'll go back to one 2hr nap and maybe two 30 min naos! My mom seems to think just because M's eyes are open means she's not tired!

Good luck! I know how it feels to have a little one that won't nap! The worst part is she'll cry the whole time so I know she's overtired!!

DD is definitely a cat napper during the day & the less daytime sleep she gets the worse she sleeps at night. Guess its because she's over tired.

I really do all I can to get her to sleep between each meal, including laying her on my chest or going up to our bed & sleeping with her. This is usually the only "real" nap she gets all day bc all other naps are ~20 minutes.

I would try using the clock to put lo down as opposed to sleep cues. Like the pp said babies usually need sleep evey 1 1/2 hrs or so. You may also try pushing a wake-up, eat, wake time, sleep pattern during the day. This has really help DD & then at bedtime we swap & get her nice & full before laying her down.

You should also check out the YouTube video "5 words babies use (language)" its a clip from a guest on Oprah & helped me TREMENDOUSLY with deciphering the "pre-cry" of DD whether uncomfy, hungry, sleepy, or gassy... Knowing what her "sleepy" sound sounded like really helped me start getting her down before she was overstimulated & hysterical. :)

Like @mamacate said, weissbluth does say that fussiness peaks at 6 weeks and there's also a big growth spurt at that age.

My LO also looooved to fight sleep at that age and I would bend over backwards to get him to nap so I feel your pain! I have read that at that age, babies can only handle about one hour of awake time before needing to sleep. My LO is 14 weeks and can handle 1.5 hrs max before becoming a bear.

Is he cranky most of the day when he doesn't nap? If he is happy then I would worry less, but if he is a grump then I would be very proactive in watching for sleepy cues. If he never yawns (my LO yawned 24-7 and it drove me nuts!) then watch for when he zones out and stares off into space and start a nap routine. We swaddle, use white noise and a paci.

Weissbluth also recommends doing anything you can to maximize daytime sleep whether it's co-sleeping, swings, carseats, etc.

Yikes! Poor you! And poor LO! at that age i think almost all babies have a hard time sleeping. I do believe the idea that sleep begets sleep. When LO was that age we tried to do the weissbluth max 2 hour window. This meant looking for sleepy signs but also starting the nap routine within 90-100 minutes after waking up even without sleep signs. Thatbook also said fussiness peaks at 6 weeks so maybe there is light at tbeend of the tunnel?

Do you have a sling or moby?are you open to trying one? We used to do at least one nap a day in the moby because it was less of a fight...hang in there!

Oh, and as a side note, he has consistent reflux and a lot of painful gas.

My 6 week old has never been much of a sleeper. Most days he may take an hour long nap and not much else. Sometimes that nap isn't even until 4 pm or so. He fights every drop of sleep he can.

After a day awake, you'd think he might pass out eventually and sleep well at night, but that's a fight in itself. We always start his bedtime routine between 6-7 pm (shower, pj's, book and bottle/nurse), but he fights sleep until at least 11:30 every night. And then he's up to eat at 2 and 4 am, and often refuses to go back down until 6:30 am (then up at 7:30 always). He's just always wide awake.

I've been trying my hardest to get him down when I see any signs of sleepiness, but they are honestly rare. I see him yawn maybe twice a day. I'm just so exhausted and he doesn't even seemed phased by how little he sleeps. There are plenty of 24 hour periods in which he's only slept 6 hours or so. Then, of course, he chooses a day a week or so to sleep literally all day, then the cycle starts over.

I guess I just need some support. My biggest desire right now is just trying to get him to bed at a reasonable hour. Anyone have advice?
