My DH is not a reader but he likes all of Bill Simmons's books (he's big sports guy). And his favorite novel is Catch 22 by Joseph Heller.

My husband's favorite authors are Harlan Coban, Daniel Silva, and Vince Flynn- all kind of manly suspense-y books. He's also a HUGE history buff- like insane loves it- so we have a few books like the book the movie Lincoln was based off of, but also he has almost every Harry Turtledove book. They're alternate history books, I believe they start off with if the South won the civil war, and go from there for YEARS. DH reads them faster than this preggo eats... which is fast. LMK if you want me to elaborate on any and give you some titles if you think any of them would interest your DH!

Looking at our bookshelves, tucked behind DW's baby books and everything that Alan Hollinghurst has ever written, are a few of my favourites:

John Le Carré or Len Deighton for spy fiction;
Iain M. Banks or William Gibson for hard sci-fi/cyberpunk;
Douglas Adams or John Scalzi for humorous sci-fi;
China Mieville or Hannu Rajaniemi for fantasy;
Ted Chiang for just amazing speculative fiction;
Paul Auster or David Foster Wallace for contemporary American fiction with a more philosophical bent (Auster's 'New York Trilogy' is a modern classic, while DFW's 'Infinite Jest' will keep your DH busy for a very, very long time!);
Donald Barthelme for short stories of all kinds.

I should stress, though, that while those are all guy authors, they aren't specifically "guy" authors: I would be amazed to find out that women didn't read any of them, as they're all brilliant. (Please let me know if any of that was useful.)

I posed this question to my DH, who is a very avid reader and writes for a living. He actually suggested going back and reading something you've enjoyed in the past to see if you get more out of it and to get the reading juices flowing again (if you're not a habitual reader).

Then I needled DH for an actual suggestion and he said Stephen King. He loves It and The Shining.

@ChillyBear - Leonardo DiCaprio's production company bought the rights to Devil in the White City and he's expected to play Holmes!

If he likes dark humor, my DH really liked Hope: A tragedy.

Anything by Nick Hornby or Michael Chabon. Their novels are all incredibly well written and witty. High Fidelity (Hornby) and The Yiddish Policeman's Union (Chabon) are good places to start.

Straight Man by Richard Russo - also very funny and well written.

If he likes history, Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantal is amazing.

Bill Bryson's books are fascinating and very readable, and he writes about so many subjects that there is bound to be one of interest. I've recently gifted his book "At Home" to my mother's partner and to DH's brother-in-law, and they both really enjoyed it.

@Bookworm: I love Kurt Vonnegut! He's my favorite for a dark, witty read. I turn to Tom Robbins for a light witty read. They are the best!
