Another vote for Noom! I initially did IF, lost 15 lbs and then flat lined for several months. I started Noom in Sept and have lost 19 lbs. I am 3 lbs away from my goal weight. It's been amazing! I probably could have gotten to my goal weight even sooner (I'm not complaining!) But we've had birthdays, anniversaries and now Christmas. Noom was my last ditch effort. I had no interest in typical diets. Noom really isn't. It uses CBT and causes you to be reflective, interspective, and approach nutrition in a balanced way. It's been life changing.

@CatchAFallingStar: I've had a lot of success with WW in the past... if you don't mind tracking daily it should work. They allow extra points for "cheats" which is super helpful... they've re-structured their program a few times and I think its really good now... once you track carefully for a few weeks it becomes a lot faster & easier.

I recently had tried to sign up for Beach Body -- what I liked mostly about it was that there was a coach that kept you motivated on social media in a private group. There's a shakeology component to the diet - I WISHED I liked it but I found it completely gross. The Beach Body workouts are good and theres a lot of them. I like the option to have 5-10 minute options some days and work my way up.... It does involve you. having to structure your own menu with their FIXX system, but if you're willing to put in the time it seems great.

You could also just track your calories on the LoseIt app... Maybe get some friends together to all do it? We did this last winter, there is a "Challenge" option in there and we had a prize for the winner....

Good luck!

@yellowbeach: @Kemma: The thing I liked about Noom, especially at the beginning, is that it does help you do things like identify triggers and patterns of behavior, figure out replacement behaviors, plus the thoughts and feelings that go with the behavior, and build up slowly. It helped me do little things like, instead of automatically grabbing a piece of candy from the bowl I keep in my office in the afternoons, I would take a quick walk around instead.

I’m a big fan of doing the basics well and making little changes that turn into long term habits that add up to sustainable progress. Basic stuff like drinking plenty of water, minimising stress, prioritising sleep and rest, eating a decent serving of protein and 2-4 servings of veg or fruit at most meals, enjoying some form of gentle movement most days, strength training.

The cold hard truth is that the vast majority of people who diet are unable to keep the weight off so unless you can sustain your particular method of diet (Noom, WW, Keto, IF etc) and exercise for the long term you’re statistically unlikely to keep it off.

I was just saying last night I need to get active while we are locked down again. Which is difficult in winter.

I’m going to start going to zoom Zumba classes this week. I’ve done Zumba before and it is a great workout without needing anything but a bit of space.

Set small goals to start that are easy to achieve. Then when you meet them it will keep you motivated.

All the people saying that quarantine has meant way less activity, me too! I’ve been trying to make myself jog in place for five minutes a couple of times a day - sometimes I turn off my camera and do it during meetings I’m not so involved in, or I do it during breaks between meetings - I save the Seth Meyers podcast for this to motivate me to do it and make the time go faster. Keeping track of my movement on my Apple Watch has really helped - I’ve been making sure I close my rings every day and the personal challenge has really kept me going.

I'll go against the tide and say that I found Noom to be a big waste of money. I did not find it very user friendly, and didn't feel like the articles were telling me anything novel. For me, any of the free food and activity trackers is just as effective.

@JennyPenny: The lack of physical activity while working at home is the hardest part of all of this for me! I haven't been able to figure out how to fit in walking every day, but my body craves physical activity after sitting in front of Zoom all day. @CatchAFallingStar: I have been doing lots of yoga and dance "classes" through YouTube and Instagram, which doesn't make a big difference in my weight, but does help me to feel a lot better in my body.

Wow I’m going to look into Noom after reading these responses! I too am in the 30 pound boat 😭 It seems overwhelming. I managed to get to 6 pounds UNDER pre-pregnancy weight by the time DS turned 2, but it’s all crept back and then some in the past 3 years. Obviously quarantine hasn’t helped either. I know I’ll need to cut out alcohol to make a dent. I’m researching now something to start in the new year that is sustainable....

Another Noom fan! I started Noom in mid-September and have lost a little over 20 pounds so far. The lessons and the tracking are really what did it for me. I plan to add back exercise into my life but really needed to tackle my own thoughts/actions/roadblocks around food first and I am really happy with my mental and non-scale victories. At this point I added in some intermittent fasting and am seeing consistent progress without feeling deprived. Noom is flexible enough to let you figure out what works for YOU while sticking to the same basic principles of its program.

I also did Beachbody programs (21 Day Fix with container portions) several years ago after DD1 and lost about 30 lb at the time. It worked really well for my life then, but grad school, a promotion, and baby#2 caused me to gain that back plus another 30. I still have a Beachbody on demand account and plan to use it for home workouts again.

For context I was at a similar starting point - 5’8” and about 210 lb. I don’t know what my end/happy weight will be but I’m just going to keep on my path and see how I feel.

Loving intermittent fasting! I know there are a few threads on HB that you can check out. It's not a diet but a lifestyle. You can also check out Gin Stephens who has written a few books on this.

I agree that my activity level has gone way down since March so hoping to ramp that up. I have a hard time putting myself in a routine and need the ability to go to my small classes gym. I'm just not comfortable with that right now. But it's too easy to talk myself out of doing it at home.

@JennyPenny: Agreed! With working from home, I'm just missing out on so much regular daily activity. For awhile I was using an old school pedometer to make sure I got a decent number of steps in, even if it meant just wandering around the house during the day.

Another vote for Noom here. I joined last April and was able to lose 25 lbs by September-ish. I still want to lose more but without being able to find time for proper exercise, I’m happy to just maintain right now.

Weight aside, it’s really changed my relationship with food and I feel so much better not eating as many processed/sugary foods.

For me, the biggest thing I noticed was that quarantine has led to a significant decrease in my regular activity. So even if I was eating how I would during regular time, I would gain weight. So, I've made a point to try and walk at least 60 minutes every day (usually three 20 minute walks). This is necessary to bring me to a baseline of pre-pandemic times. And not pre-pandemic exercise, just the steps I took going to work, leaving the house, running errands, etc. Then to lose weight I need to either do more exercise on top of that or count calories.

I've always done well with myfitnesspal, and counting calories / holding myself accountable. Like, if I eat this extra serving I have to do this many more minutes on the treadmill to hit my goal for the day.
I also like intermittent fasting; I skip breakfast and only eat between 11 and 7.
I am NOT one to not be able to eat my favorite foods, so I find it easier to just cut back on how much I eat instead.

I have also really liked Noom. The articles for the first couple months were really helpful and interesting, and now I like the group chat aspect for support. It's been pretty easy to track calories and also add in exercise. I will say that it's been a little hard to stay within my calorie budget because I also don't have a lot of time to exercise. But I've lost 10 pounds since the end of September.

I think looking at cutting calories might a good start if your diet is not "ideal". Maybe try myfitnesspal, and/or focus on eating simple unprocessed foods. If there isn't time to do a full workout, sneak in mini sessions when you can. I know it doesnt sound fun, but something like doing dishes? Calf raises. Everytime after you pee? A quick squat session. Before getting into bed? A few pushups or sit ups. Just little things that take a few minutes, but will strengthen and build muscle.

I love Noom and it is the only program that has worked for me. It is so hard now with everything closed but for me the combo of increased awareness of normal activity/output (step count) and input (calories consumed) have been the key elements. Not extra workouts. Good luck and that body also gets you around the world and helped you bring new people into the world...just a balance the impatience and desire to change (which I absolutely get too).

I have gained about 20 pounds since DD was born in March. I weigh 211 at 5’9”. This is SO heavy for me. I’m wearing a size 16 jeans. My weight pre-pregnancy was about 180 and I just want to get back there. But with no gyms, lots of rain, 3 kids, etc... I feel like my weight loss resources are thin. Maybe I should just cut calories? Any advice?
