We had/still have this problem - especially with underarm thermometers for a newborn I never feel like they are quite right. I've started just taking my own temperature before or after using the thermometer and as long as we are both in the normal range, I trust it.

I generally trust our exergen temporal or Braun ear thermometer for our toddler, but those aren't reliable methods for young infants/newborns.

I never used a rectal thermometer with either child. We always use a temporal artery thermometer; it's what our pediatrician uses as well. We have the Exergen brand.

I just use the Up&Up brand. I like my BBT thermometer better than a regular one because it seems more accurate.

After checking LO's temp rectally at every diaper change in the past 24 hours with three thermometers, getting inconsistent readings, I'm planning to go out and buy maybe 2 more thermometers in about an hour. Which ones have you used that you trust to give you consistent, accurate readings?

Eta: two of the three that we have had good Amazon reviews, but they're weird brands. The one DH bought in store last night without checking Amazon reviews, has been giving consistently the highest readings that has 50% 1 star Amazon reviews. We gave our safety first one to our babysitter.
