Thanks for responding, everyone. After negotiations this morning, I will not be moving forward with the position. They were only able to come up $2,000. This is not enough to make the move. :(

Agree with the comments above. Percentage is more what you need to look at and ask for a higher amount so there is room to negotiate.

I interviewed for a position last week and was told the starting salary is equal to what I make now and I was honest in telling them that it was not enough for me to consider making the move. They offered to work with me on a signing bonus but acknowledged they could not get close so I let them know I would not be moving forward. It's a lot like buying a car, you have to be willing to walk away if they can't meet your price.

I say this with much more confidence than I used to be able to muster but others get paid more and instead of being frustrated I realized it was within my power to ask for what I deserve.

A job has to pay what you’re worth or else it isn’t going to work long term. You’ll get frustrated and burnt out and want to leave much sooner. As others have said percent makes more difference than the raw number in terms of what you’re asking for, but as long as you can give reasons, asking for more is totally justified. As @JennyPenny: said, if you want to land at 10, I would go back with 15-20 to give more room to come down. If they want you they should negotiate, especially since it sounds like they knew they were lowballing unless they told you outright that was firm.

Definitely ask for what you want! I used to negotiate salaries for a small consulting firm and always told people to be honest with me about what could make this work for them and their thought process (eg it not being worth moving otherwise). If we couldn’t meet it, we would be honest back, but we’d try to think creatively about whether we could offer something else (signing bonus, etc). That doesn’t apply everywhere but absolutely ask and see what happens!

@winter_wonder: Obnoxious is not a factor in this. You shouldn't worry about offending them when it sounds like they know their offer was essentially offensively low. You have nothing to lose by asking for what you're worth. Especially if you couldn't take the offer anyway. You can do this!

I think it partly depends on the starting offer. I mean 12k more on 20k seems like a much bigger deal than 12k on 100k. But I don't think it's obnoxious to ask especially if it makes the difference between it being a reasonable move for your family and one that doesn't make sense at all. You also have some clear justification.

Get your money! Don’t undervalue your worth!! What would a middle age white man do? Probably ask for 20,000 more

All, please help with this negotiating question.

I'm in the midst of negotiating for a new position. The offer I received came with a salary comparable for someone with no experience (and the person making the offer acknowledged this). Is it obnoxious to come back asking for $12,000 (in hopes of settling at $10,000 more). Otherwise, financially this move may not make sense for me/my family. Help!

DH is resistant to a move right now, particularly with everything going on with the economy. Being an adult is stressful!
