I would just tell him that you want to find an amicable solution, but that you talked to code enforcement and he's technically violating the city ordinance. Tell him you don't want to go through the official channels since you live next door, but it's just not okay with you that you and your kids are woken up at 4am every weekend. If he wants to be #sorrynotsorry, so can you.

@Madison43: Yes! The second he starts it up, I can feel it in my bones! SO.LOUD. And that's not even revving it. At least your neighbor did the respectable thing by towing. I'm hoping to convince him to do this too, as I know he has a huge F-250.

@Mrs. Carrot: Yeah, I was thinking of that too... but good to have it in my tool belt in case he becomes a jerk about the noise thing... When he does it this weekend (and I know he will), I plan to go outside and see where he is... my guess is that he might be in the culdesac but that it doesn't help the noise issue at all.
@Ajsmommy: This! I actually moved my son's room so it wouldn't be the room right next to their house. But the new room is only about 20 more feet away, and I don't think it helps. It used to wake up my kid during nap too! Infuriating! But at least that was during the day and not at 5am! I was thinking of posting on the Nextdoor app, too! Lol.

@BabyTsMom: my next door neighbor growing up built race cars and I still remember how loud they were. Literally would vibrate our windows when he started them up. But he towed them to shows. I would try talking to him again and then go to the town.

@BabyTsMom: I would actually leave out the structure thing, because it could put him on the defensive very quickly, but I would revisit the noise issue with him again and mention that it's very disruptive to you and your family and he did say he'd do it in the cul de sac and you haven't noticed that so can that happen going forward. If he's #sorrynotsorry about it, then I would mention that he's violating the ordinance and you'd rather not involve the authorities but you'd need to if he isn't willing to work it out.

I'd call the police but only, if as you said, it is a regular thing.

Our neighbors are in a motorcycle club and they host "work on your bike days" (I made the name up.. but lots of people come over and work on their bikes in their driveway/garage) On mothers day 2 years ago they rev'ed engines ALL day(not in violation of anything bc it was during the day), DD couldn't nap and I was furious. I took the passive aggressive way out and posted about it on fb on our community page... they saw it and commented. They haven't done it again since. They still have those parties but they don't rev engines and are pretty quiet.... I mean quiet enough as to not disturb us or nap :)

But if they hadn't stopped and were violating the noise ordinances I probably would have eventually called the police....

ETA: I caught a lot of slack from fb'ers who said I should have just talked to them about it.. but I'm not confrontational and I honestly didn't want to. So I chose to do what I did.. and I'd do it again

@catomd00: I suspect he is storing them elsewhere, because he has several, and not enough garage space for them. I should find out, because he could easily just leave for the shows from there!

@T.H.O.U.: @Mrs. Carrot: When I brought it up, we had just happened to see each other outside, and I casually brought it up, saying it woke us up, etc. He wasn't a jerk but he was pretty much like #sorrynotsorry because of the car show times. He did offer to roll it into the cul-de-sac (he's at the end) and start from there, but if he is doing that, I haven't noticed a difference.
I am fairly certain his strange storage/garage structure is a code violation, as it sits nearly flush to our shared side wall (not adhering to the minimum setback standards), so I guess I could imply that I would report him for that if he doesn't try to work with me.

@BabyTsMom: I am exactly the same way, but the other day I called the police on my neighbors (I'm in a condo building) after security in my building refused to make any kind of effort to address the party my neighbors were having on their balcony at nearly midnight. The cops came and broke up the whole thing within a few minutes. I do agree with @T.H.O.U. though, if he's at least receptive to talking, I feel like there has to be a way to resolve this but if he just shuts you down, I think you can tell him that this isn't acceptable and you would need to get the authorities involved.

@BabyTsMom: When you have talked to him about it, how was it brought up and what was his tone? Is he at least sympathetic? Do you think he would be open to discussing options with you? Can you at least let him know that you would like to discuss options because otherwise your only option may be to involve the officials?

@Mrs. Carrot: Yeah, you're right. I'm such a nonconfrontational introvert though. Haha. But a bigger issue is that it really only lasts about 5 minutes so even if I called the cops, they wouldn't get here in time. Then he'd just deny it. Supposedly, according to the city code, they'd have to have the health inspector (???) come out and measure the sound level with a meter and go from there. I'm THIS close to going the official route. But, again, the introvert in me is cringing at this.

If it's a violation of a city ordinance, why can't you call the police? Obviously I would start with a more firm talk with him about how disruptive this is to you and your family, and see if he's willing to figure out some kind of compromise like the hitch, but if it doesn't abate and he's not willing to obide by the city rule, can't you call the police? I know noise violations aren't always a big priority, but that doesn't sound acceptable to me to live with.

@FaithFertility: You feel my pain, then! It's terrible. The guy has been here for 30 plus years so he's not moving anytime soon. I've been living with this for 4 years but the last straw was last weekend, when he started at 4:50am!
Did you ever talk to him about it or contact your city and file a complaint?

@T.H.O.U.: I'm not sure, actually. I haven't come out to see but I think it's probably the driveway. Their actual garage is a converted office but he has another nearly-enclosed structure where he could be starting it there. (This structure is what's closest to us).... He has a wide gravel pathway leading to the backyard on the other side but it's not covered so he probably won't do that.... :/

So my older next-door neighbor restores classic cars from the 40s and 50s. They're beautiful but LOUD. As in, the minute the engine is turned on, you hear and feel a rumbling, low, thundering growl. Once it's warmed up after a few minutes, he then revs the engine a few times to get it going.... This lasts maybe 5 minutes total but the second that first grumble is heard, we are up. Our bedrooms and his driveway are close to one another. We wear earplugs and use white noise.

Problem: he does this at 4:50-5:30am on the weekends, quite regularly. I've asked him to refrain from doing this until 7am, as it immediately wakes me and DH up, and sometimes wakes my son up too. He said he can't, because often he has to get to his car shows by 7am. Grrrr.

Our city has a specific noise ordinance, and "quiet time" from 10p-7a and he's clearly violating it. No HOA. I talked to someone from the city and it sounds like there is a long process of getting it officially solved, if I decide to go down that route.

I'm so pissed! I wake up early as it is, like 6:30-7, but I don't want to be woken up by his damn cars almost every weekend.

I am considering asking him to hitch his car to his truck and I don't really see him agreeing to it, but what else can I do? I don't know if the other neighbors are as affected, as it's just our bedrooms that are closest to the driveway.

Does anyone have any good advice, or a successful story in dealing with noisy neighbors?
