Have you tried shushing the dog? We had a similar issue and the way our houses are situated (also very close together like you described) the neighbor's backyard was aligned with our master bedroom, so even if our windows were closed, we could hear their dog barking nonstop, day and night, in our room. I used to open the window and tell it to shut up. It was actually quite effective. I never called the police, we have our own dog that is quite a barker too (though we do try to limit his barking and we do bring him inside, but there have been numerous occasions where LO is sleeping and we just lock him outside because he goes bananas and we don't want him to wake LO!!!)

@MrsADS: please call the police! I work as a police dispatcher and we always advise people to not confront. Just in case they are not kind or don't do well with confrontation. Sorry you are having to deal with this! Barking dogs are the worst, from personal experience :silly:

Our non-emergency line just takes the info from you over the phone and then sends an officer out. Helps if you have an address for the house and they will send someone out there to make a house call. I agree it helps if you keep track of hours of noise and all that too, because if you have to call them out a few times, the repeat calls plus a log of the calls can work in your favor if this thing escalates. Hopefully they just get their act together and take their stupid dog inside.

@ladybee: My thoughts exactly. I always feel awful for the dog! I would skip the letter and make a formal complaint.

Thanks guys. You're so right - the kind of people who leave their dog out to bark all day will probably not care about a letter! Plus, I also get nervous about retaliation. People are crazy.

I will look into making the complaint. With the police non-emergency line, does the officer come to *your* house to talk to you about what happened, get a report, etc.? Or do they just go to the neighbor? I have thought about calling but then I think.... I just don't want to deal with all of that.

He's going again right now... I can hear it in our bedroom with the windows shut.

Oh be those neighbours!!

Whatever you are comfortable with, either letter to neighbs or go to city.

I just finished process of making complaint thru city and they wanted a log of the noise, when it happened, what it was/is. Essentially the city wanted to see a pattern so they could send someone out to catch the offender to "charge" them. Maybe a mini log included in letter to neighbours, with copy of by-law?

Also, I'm snarky so I would write in a one liner about animal licensing too, most people in our area don't have their pets licensed so the "threat" of getting caught on two things, usually shuts 'em up in a hurry!

I have made many a by-law complaint, but am of the mind that with our high taxes, might as well have by law work and help keep our neighbourhood clean (we had a noise problem, and two families that didn't clean their dogs poop up).

I sort of feel like the kind of person who leaves a dog outside all day every day (esp if that dog is barking and clearly not wanting to be outside) is not going to be the kind of person who gives a shit that they are disturbing the whole neighborhood. So I'd just go direct to the non-emergency police line and make a complaint.

I think you must live in my neighborhood! Our neighbors in back of us leave their dogs out all the time and they constantly bark, making other nearby dogs bark and so on. I can deal with it during regular hours during the day but the nighttime/ overnight is my issue. I have debated sending a letter as well, but we dont know them at all and I worry about retaliation if it progresses because they just dont care. They have to hear it cause we can hear it clear as day in our house with all the doors and windows shut. Last night it started at 4 am and never stopped :( Sadly I think we are going to be calling the cops anytime it is during the "quiet" time per our county laws/ordinances. These are also the same neighbors that we had to turn in because they decided to get a rooster one day...no chickens or anything, just a rooster that roamed their small backyard (which is also against the law in our area). I feel your pain, hope it gets better soon!

I wouldn't do the letter. I'd just go straight to the noise complaint. That has to be soooo annoying!!!!!

Non-emergency line with the police department. DH calls on our neighbors all the time, not even anonymously either. He's like "that's what we pay taxes for - let the cops handle it."

So we moved to our house about 6 weeks ago. The neighbors who live directly behind us have a little yappy dog who they apparently just leave out on their back patio all the time and the dog barks ALL. THE. TIME. Like, when the dog is outside, he barks nonstop.

The houses in our neighborhood are pretty close together, so I know if we can hear the dog, so can all the other neighbors. Thankfully, it doesn't seem so bad really late at night (like after 10-11pm), but it's all afternoon and evening, especially the past few days. We can't sit out on our back patio because of the dog.

I have no idea who these people are or anything but we have to do something. We're debating... (1) leave a letter in the mailbox (i.e., control the barking or we will call the city with a noise complaint); or (2) just call the city/police at night with a noise complaint. And if we send a letter, do we put our name on it? (" FromThe MrsADS family who lives at 123 Anytown Lane") DH thinks an anonymous letter is too passive aggressive.

I hate to be "those neighbors", but it's ridiculous...
