awww poor baby! yea, our LO cried a LOT as a newborn, but it was mainly in the evening witching hours. I think going over there with some food or coffee sounds like a great idea! the mom might want some company and a "break".

I love the idea of dropping off a meal, or just cookies. Poor parents are probably so frazzled, I'll bet they'd love it. And they'd love to know that they aren't making the neighbors nuts.

our neighbor's baby cried all the time too! i couldn't hear her through the walls, but the cries came through the door, down the hallway and through our door. she seems like a happy kid now though. i felt bad...i think it depends on the baby though. my dd had a pretty easy temperament and only cried if there was something wrong. we were very lucky. my point is, don't let it scare you too much. you could end up with a super easygoing baby too :)

@Kemma: I like this idea!! I wish we were living here when she had her, so we could have dropped off dinner. Mama recently went back to work, so baby is there with a temporary nanny all day. She starts day care next week. Papa is pretty quiet (we've tried bonding with him several times without much return). Maybe I'll drop off a gift card and a treat from our local coffee/treat shop (since our schedules don't like up) with a note to relax & indulge!! :)

@Pink Champagne: I would never drown my own baby out with music. This isn't my baby, and I liken it to hearing a dog barking all day. This was more a post to know what is normal. And, you're right, it's taken us a long time to get pregnant/carry to term, so we don't have a baby yet. It sounds like (based on responses), that a baby crying all day is not normal. Once again, I feel badly for baby & the family ... Just wondered if all day crying was the norm in the beginning.

You must not have children. Poor baby... I bet poor thing is colicky. Babies do cry. Sometimes they cry a LOT.

I like Kemma's suggestion of offering to help that mama out with a meal or coffee. If anything, it's a good "get to know your neighbor" tactic.

And then hopefully, one day you'll be blessed with a baby of your own- you know, the perfect kind that never has to have its constant crying drowned out by mama's iPod...

How awful. We had a few days of terrible trapped wind which meant DD cried for several hours in the evening or at night. I almost went insane, I was so stressed. We have solved it (touch wood) with different bottles but it gave me a taste of what living with colic would be like and, woah.... that poor mama.

Nope, that isn't normal. It happens to some babies, but it isn't the norm for sure. My baby never cried, except when she had a specific need. Taking care of the need fixed her crying. That's the best case scenario, certainly, and I'd say it's about as likely as constant crying. Some crying is normal, but crying all day is the crummy worst case scenario.
