I'm non confrontational, so I'd call the landlord. I'd be afraid if you talk to them about it first, they will know it was you if they don't do anything about it and you still have to call the landlord.

That's not right to do to a dog, especially one that small that must get hot and cold even more easily. It's one thing to have a dog in your apartment when you aren't allowed, it's another to blatantly leave it outside and make other people smell it! Others are right-- a dog that is crate trained shouldn't be going in their crate at all.

I would talk to them and tell them that if they don't take care of the dog inside you will be forced to call the landlord and animal control. What they are doing sounds like neglect and possibly even borderline abusive depending on how long they are leaving the dog in the crate in those weather conditions.

so i think i'm gonna go against the grain here & ask DH to talk to the husband. i'm gonna have him blame it on our cat- just say, 'hey, we love your cute puppy, but our old sick kitty gets stressed when he can hear him out on the porch and it makes his pancriatitus get worse. could you please keep your pup inside.' it would be hard to get mad at us for that, right? ahhh. i'm so afraid of pissing his wife off!

Tell the landlord.

That poor dog. I would probably call animal control if they leave it out like that.

Aww, that poor poor dog :(. A dog that's crated shouldn't be pooping in the crate unless they're seriously desperate to go. And leaving a dog in all kinds of weather is not something I'd be at all comfortable with for my own dog. I'd probably tell the landlord, unfortunately. They don't sound like good dog owners, I hope that if they have to get rid of the dog they take it to a no kill shelter or find some other family who wants it :(.

Tough one....

I would have your DH talk to the husband (since they are friendly) and say that you don't care that they have a dog, but please keep it inside & out of public areas...especially since the smell of dog poo is less than pleasant, and you shouldn't have to smell it!

If it were me I would also mention that this is the first and only time I would ask them to do this, and if it continues to be a problem then I would have no choice but to bring it to the attention of the landlord.

we live on the top floor of a building with 6 units, 2 on each floor. there is a small porch out front on each floor with a door that opens to the stairwell. today i came up the front stairs and it smelled awful- like dog. dogs are not allowed in our building but the people across the hall recently got a tiny dog, <5lbs, and they keep crating it out there. they leave it out there most nights, even one night when we had a frost advisory, and today it was in the mid 80s, the front porch gets hot and they left it crated out there all day. i'm assuming there is dog waste in the crate with it from the smell in the hallway. i don't care that they have a tiny dog, i care that they seem to be hurting it and that it smells and yaps at my cat through the window (he has pancriatitus and it acts up when he gets stressed). DH is friendly with the husband & the wife has gotten in fights with other people in the building, like craaazy fights that DH has had to break up, so i don't wanna get on their bad side.

what would you do? tell the landlord? ask them to keep it in their apartment? ignore it?
