@artbee: your dog sounds like ours. He has gotten off his leash multiple times.mhes very sneaky, and when he gets out, he goes on a crazy exploration and is missing for a while. He can also jump the fence at my dad's house, so we are extra careful and watch him closely. I agree that it can be an accident, but I still feel like its our fault when it happens.

We have a house on our road that has a serious issue with animals out and we've called the police several times. They chase people and other animals, get into people's garages and garage, and one of them even peed through our screen door onto my dogs nose! They also stand in the middle of the road (which is a 55 mph country road) at the top of the hill. It's an accident waiting too happen.

Your neighbors sound like they need a talking-to, maybe by police since it appears that they don't recognize there is a problem.

Golden retrievers are often friendly, but they have to be trained not to jump on people because they're so big! If the golden were to jump on a person who doesn't have good balance or a small child, they could easily knock them over and injure them. That's a huge problem, in my opinion. And it's one that the owners can fix with a month or so of weekly obedience classes, so there's no excuse.

@JamieLee: I'm pretty sure the dog was fenced in, but he could figure out how to get out. Which I agree is the owner's fault since it's happened before, they should find a way to fix it or not leave the dog in that area unattended.

My dog is an escaper and will run out the door any chance he gets. We put a fence up in our front yard because of it.... but he's still managed to get out when the garage door is open and somebody opens the door to our garage. He will be laying down all sleepy so nobody thinks he will run out..... but then all of a sudden he's out the door! It's always company that's over and they just don't get it, even though we always tell people. So I do get how it can be just an accident.

@artbee: I would agree that it's not your brother's fault, but its not the dog's fault either. It's the owner's fault 100%. As a dog owner, it is their responsibility to keep the dog safe and not having the dog leashed or fenced in is not keeping the dog safe. What a terrible situation. Sorry your brother had to go though that. I would be heartbroken if I hit a dog even if it wasn't my fault.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: My brother also ran over a dog. His owner didn't blame my brother at all though because it wasn't the first time he got hit.... obviously it's the dogs fault and not my brother's. He felt so awful about it though.

@Beebug: Good idea, I'm going to start a log on both dogs and families.

I don't know if I am ready to call the police, eventhough there is a leash law in my city. My HOA meeting is coming up and I will bring up my concern then.

@artbee: My brother ran over the neighbor's dog at my mom's house. Once again the dog wasn't on the leash and darted out onto the street. Sad thing is the dog was a replacement dog for an older dog that died. Even sadder the neighbor no longer makes us Zucchini bread during the holidays.

We have a law that your dog needs to be on a leash. Here's a sad story.... do you watch tern mom? One of the girls didn't have her dog on a leash so it ran free and ran to another dog that was tied up. The other dog attacked it and it died. But since her dog wasn't on a leash the police said it's her fault and she can't do anything about it.

We've caller the police on someone for not keeping their dog on a leash. The dog tried to attack my dog (dh stuck his foot out in front so he couldn't get to him) and the owner was nowhere in sight. Hes never on a leash and pood in everyones yard, again with the owner nowhere in sight. The attack was he last straw though so dh called the police.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: It should have nothing to do with the breed...with every breed there are aggressive and poorly trained dogs and every owner needs to be following the rules.

Oh that is so scary.
We have a neighbour with a small dog that barks.all.the.time. This will be our first summer here, and I am a little scared about the amount of barking we are about to deal with.

I would be logging incident's and reporting to your city/town asap! We have a well behaved dog who we let walk offleash and still received a complaint (and subsequent ticket/fine) by someone who wasn't comfortable with him off leash (we think). There's no need for them running wild and causing grief like that, perhaps someone from by-law showing up will get them to keep their dogs fenced or leashed on their property?

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: Oh, no, that's not good! Maybe you should look at the leash laws in your county and call some authorities. Jumping dogs are not ok when you're supposed to be safe in your own home.

@Dandelion: Yes, they were outside while we were getting into our car. After I picked up the dog to get it out of my car the neighbor came over to pick up the dog and take it back to her years. The dog b kept trying to get in.

Another incident happened with the larger dog. My dad was getting into the car and the dog jumped on his back. Its a golden retriever so I didn't panic, but my dad completely froze and was scared because he didn't see the dog at all. Once he realized it was a friendly breed he was okay, but the neighbors took a long time to call their dog. Jumping dogs are not okay!

I don't think you would be liable, since their dog came onto your property without your permission/welcome, and there's usually leash laws in place for that.

ETA: The neighbor watched this happen? That's crazy! Poor dog!

That dog needs to be on a leash whenever it's outside their house! It would be hard to fault you when that neighbor is knowingly letting their dog run around without a leash (this is why there are leash laws).

My neighbor across the street has a dog that often runs around off-leash and she's been known to run into our yard. It terrifies me that she's going to get hit by a car and I've actually seen her involved in many close calls, yet he doesn't think to just keep her on some sort of Flexi-leash.

Yesterday as DH and I were leaving our of our driveway I almost decapitated my next door neighbor's small dog! To say this dog and another larger one on our cul de sac is untrained would be an understatement. The dogs run wild when not in a leash, they always leave their yard, and jump on people or try to a enter cars.

As I was closing my car door I noticed something scurry by a long the side of the door. Just when I thought it was safe to close the door again the small dog jumps in the doorway. I immediately stop pulling the door shut and start pushing it open. So after the next door neighbor takes their dog back they put the dog back on the ground. The dog ran out onto the street and I I had to stop and wait in the middle of the street looking for the dog before completely driving away.

Is it so hard to train a dog? If I did end up injuring or killing the dog, by accident, would I be liable for damages?
