@littlejoy: no signs of food intolerances that I’m aware of. The pain is only on my right nipple which leads me to believe it’s an issue with me rather than with him.

@Boopers: Vasospasms are tricky!! Warmth really helps me. I use Earth Mama Angel Baby nipple butter. I was using APNO when I had some trauma on the nipple, but the steroid can cause thinning of tissues, and I didn't want to make myself more susceptible to infection or additional trauma.

For me, gluten is a big trigger. But I'm a glutton for punishment - I'm already vegan, so no gluten is really hard!!

Does your baby have any signs of food intolerance (like rash around mouth or rough skin)? My doctor (not LC) maintains that my nipples are inflamed because my baby has a food intolerance, and her saliva makes my nipples sensitive??

Sometimes it just feels like a lost cause, which sounds depressing ... I'm just glad (for me) that it comes and goes. I don't think I could deal with it all of the time.

@littlejoy: I’m assuming the vasospasms are from compression based on my previous experience with them with LO1 and I only get them on the right side. My left nipple is more “normal” and I haven’t had any issues this time other than initial nursing pain but that eventually went away.

What nipple butter do you use? I’ve been using APNO but I don’t think it helps other than helping previous damage not get infected. I used lanolin with LO1 but I’m not sure how much it actually helped.

Also, what inflammatory foods have you cut out?

Are you sure the vasospasms are from compression? I also have them (I'm sure a bit of it is latch), but my LC attributes them to Raynaud's syndrome.

Being religious about nipple butter, massage and warm packs helps. I also always focus on a good latch.

LO is 5 months old, and I still have vasospasm pain ... she's been checked by the best IBCLC in town, and she just doesn't have tie/mouth issues.

I've found that cutting inflammatory foods has helped ... adding systemic turmeric (like tea or supplement) can help a bit with that stinging or inflammation of the nipple.

I'm so sorry you're dealing with that!!

@peaches1038: I’ve read that link before, but thanks for linking it. I’ll need to re-read it for new ideas. I also had vasospasms with LO1 and my LC recommended a heating pad which did help a bit, but it only relieved pain after I nursed. I can handle the vasospasm pain much better than the nipple pain while nursing. I also used a shield for the first 2 months with LO1 because of the cracks he was causing on my nipples but it lead to poor weight gain so I had to go cold turkey and it hurt like a mother until the pain eventually went away. I tried a nipple shield once with LO2 and the second he latched and clamped down it felt so incredibly uncomfortable I ripped it off and I haven’t used it again.

I will look into the grapefruit seed extract pills. Did it help with your pain while nursing or after nursing?

Ouch! I had vasospasms and found that using a heating pad on my breast before, during and after nursing really helped. Also, I took grapefruit seed extract pills, which is usually for thrush but it also helped me. I found this article helpful when researching vasospasms. Maybe you could discuss some of these supplement recommendations with a LC? Maybe a nipple shield would help? Good luck!

LO2 is 3 months old today and I am still having a lot of nipple pain, but only on the right side. I haven’t been diagnosed with nerve damage, but I highly suspect that’s what’s going on.

Background: I nursed LO1 with lots of pain until sometime between 3 and 4 months. He had a high palette, tongue and lip ties revision and shallow latch which caused cracked nipples, but the pain eventually went away. LO2 also had a tongue and lip tie revision and I was having lots of clear nipple blisters on the right side due to a poor latch but he no longer damages the nipple. My right nipple was flat before LO1 and is shorter than my other nipple which I think is making it more painful than the left.

I basically can only nurse on my right side 1-2 times before I have to pump to get some pain relief. The pain isn’t as bad when I’m having a let down, but when the milk slows down and he has to really suck to get milk it is pretty painful and it’s always in the same exact spot in my nipple. I suffer from vasospams on that side once we are done nursing due to the compressions while nursing. I’ve worked with a LC to help with positioning which helped for a bit but it has never been painless on the right side.

I’m at a loss for what to do. I’m basically just painfully trucking along hoping the pain goes away like it did with LO1, but the pain feels different this time around so I’m not really sure what to expect.

Anyone have a similar experience?
