@aprild: I would be worried about that school, to tell you the honest truth....not all private schools are created equal and the reason why some of them have the success rates that they do is because they weed out the kids that would need extra support and focus instead on the ones that are typical learners.

Ultimately I believe it is a crapshoot! They attempt to balance classrooms, and then perhaps go for the families that most represent the image of the school they want to reflect. We were waitlisted at my sons school and ultimately got in in late July, so I would inquire whether the waitlist moves (altho I think we were the only ones to be admitted off the WL).

I'm shocked to hear that not all siblings were admitted in your friends story! I feel like that is almost unheard of unless there is a behavior issue. Sibling acceptance rates are one of the main reasons to try so hard with the first kid!

What @lioneyes: said. Our kids are attending public school (it's part of why we moved about an hour away!) but I went to private school for 8 years and my husband for one year and then to a magnet program. Good luck!

I think it just all depends on the school. The high school I went to is super competitive to get in. They turn away celebrity children and even people with very deep pockets so I'm definitely nervous about my daughter getting in (in 12 years). Fingers crossed thy being an alumna helps.

Then again, there are other good schools in the area that are much easier to get into as long as you have the test scores and money.

ugh people love to tell annoying (and possibly apocryphal) stories like that. just focus on you and your kid. if the fit is correct, it will be fine (and that goes for YOU thinking the school is the right fit for your family as well!) and if for some reason the numbers don't support admission this year, there are several years when schools increase class size (K, 1, 3, 6, 7, 9).

For those of you who have sent your kids to private school or have experience with the process, can you give me any words of encouragement or advice? We live in a good-sized city and there are three top private schools in the area, but they are all very competitive to get in. They won't say what their admissions rate is, but I've seen numbers that say anything from 50% to only 30% acceptance rate. The acceptance is based on a cognitive assessment, classroom observation, letter of recommendation and talking to the parents, so there are a lot of steps involved. I'm so nervous about my son getting in, and it's stressing me out!

I was talking to a mom at my son's preschool, and the subject of schools came up. I told the mom where we are applying, and she told me a story about a family she knew who had three kids. The oldest kid is already at the school in 3rd grade, and the youngest two are twins and they applied for kindergarten at the same school. They each had to go through the admissions process, and the school ended up only accepting one of the twins!! So one twin got to go to the school with her sibling and the other one had to go to a different school, and the parents are going to keep applying every year hoping the other twin will eventually get in. Hearing that made me more nervous than I already am!
