@erinbaderin: ah thanks! I installed this in our rental so hopefully the landlord will buy it from me. And I'll look into the ecobee next. That sounds exactly like what I am looking for!!

@MaryM: haha yes our programmable thermostat in our apartment right now seems haunted too. DH is convinced that we cant get a better home system ( security cameras and thermostat control) that will be much cheaper than Nest. So thats his main issue

@Littlebit7: I know this post is old but next time you're looking for a thermostat try the Ecobee - it comes with sensors you can put in different rooms. We had the same problem, it was always freezing in the nurseries, and with the Ecobee you can set it to go off different sensors at different times or take an average. Ours uses the downstairs sensor during the day when the baby and I are mostly in the kitchen/living room but at night goes by the temp in the nursery.

@Mrsbells: I can tell you by comparing our first week's usage (when we just let it go and didn't adjust) to weeks following...except when it was exceptionally cold and windy, our energy usage was down 2/3. We haven't gotten a bill since we switched over, so we haven't seen how that translates to dollars, but it seems worth it so far!

But we were also replacing a "haunted" programmable thermostat. We kept trying to reset the programs, but it kept doing it's own thing.

@MaryM: i'm following this because I am really interested in getting the nest home system when we move. DH thinks it isnt worth it but I have a few friends who swear by it

Follow up question

How long do you think it took your Nest to "learn"?

Usually, I try to change ours to Eco settings before I leave in the morning, and turn it back on when DH or I head home (whoever is first).

But I've forgotten to tell it we're away lately, and it hasn't switched into eco mode. I've double checked, and we do have our phones set so it knows our location. Any other ideas?

and make sure you have your phone's location turned on (found in location settings). I pretty much don't touch the nest much, but my husband and i have vastly differing ideas for what is a "comfortable" temperature.

My one beef with the nest, and thermostats in general, is that the temperature sensor is only in the room where the thermostat is mounted. Our nursery isn't well insulated and is at the opposite end of the house. it frequently runs 10 degrees cooler. My goal right now is to use google home, plus a samsung SmartThing, plus IFFT and come up with recipe that makes google home turn my nest up if the temperature in her room drops below a certain threshold. thats the goal anyway.
Our electric bill dropped 75% from (this october compared to last october) with Nest. I gave myself a pat on the back; not only did I champion for a nest, I installed it myself, and completely repaired the drywall from where our old one was. Our landlord is a contractor and he applauded my work.

For the first week-ish after you install it, I think you're supposed to tell it what you want it to do (so adjust it to be warmer when you're there, turn it down when you leave/go to bed, etc). Then it uses that plus your phone locations plus the movement tracker/etc to figure out your baseline & adjust accordingly on its own.

@birdofafeather: Yeah. It took me a while to get the phones set right (we both had chosen to never refresh apps in the background, which it requires), but I know they're set up right now.

I just checked it again and it was heating...yet again. Ugh. So I overrode with the eco setting. I just wasn't sure if that would help the "learning" or if we should try to be hands off at first?

We replaced our old programmable thermostat because we'd joke about it being haunted by the old woman who lived there before us. I tried reprogramming it a couple times, and it never held. We were constantly turning things up or down.

Maybe she really IS haunting the place and that's why this isn't noticing we're not home! ;)

@birdofafeather: Ours has had the same problems since the last software update. Before it, there was a certain way to get it to eco/away mode. They changed the interface on it. I thought it was on away when we were gone, but it wasn't. We've had ours for a few years now.

i have noticed that mine hasn't gone into the eco mode lately since a software update. make sure it's using your phones' locations to go into eco mode to determine no one is home. i do it on my phone if i notice it's not gone on.

It takes a while to "learn" I think it helps if you mark it away for it to learn your routines.

You can set up a schedule on the app with temps and time of day changes. We have ours turn down after bed, back up for an hour in the mornings and down again until we're home again.

DH installed the Nest I got him for Christmas (yeah, I'm a lame practical gift giver) over the weekend.

Today is the first day since it's been installed that one of us hasn't been at home.

I've been checking in on it, and it hasn't automatically gone to the away setting yet. Does it take a while? (I left 3 hours ago). Should I go ahead and tell it manually that we're not there, or will that mess with it's "learning"?

Also, does it self adjust for night time or is that something I could manually go in and do? I don't mind if it's a couple degrees colder at night since we're in bed/under the covers. But it's been at the same setting the entire weekend.

Thanks for any helpful tips!
