@Mrs D: you're right. I'm watching this a second time through, and it's so clear now that that press conference sealed the deal for both Avery and Dassey. So over the top theatrical (breaking news! Don't let the kids watch! Kratz seeming to get choked up!) And the fact that NONE of that info was ever brought up in Avery's trial, but it still must have weighed heavily on the jury. Unconscionable.

I think it also shines an interesting light on ethical responsibilities in the media.

For me, that press conference they had after Brendan confessed is such an appalling violation of a 16 year olds right to be presumed innocent (along with a 44 year old).

I'm disgusted that the DA would think it was appropriate to go into that detail given the audience - and then to have a jury selected from that audience. But I also cant help but question the media outlets who thought it was appropriate to air such a violation of civil liberties.

I get it, the media has to keep up with the Jones's and if channel 2 is going to air it then 4 and 7 have to just to keep up. But what if, just magically, they all had a conscience check and none of them aired it?

Just disturbing on so many levels.

@Ajsmommy: It has to start somewhere. It can't be that either a documentary is made about everyone or no one. I think MaM has opened so many eyes to the flaws in the criminal justice system (as did Serial), and I think it's a great starting point. Personally I'd rather people be obsessed and talking about this than the Bachelor or Keeping up with the Kardashians.

@Ajsmommy: While I feel bad that every story can't be documented and researched to death to prove a truthful verdict, I am really happy that these documents are being made about anyone. It REALLY puts pressure on people to do their jobs properly, because they could end up the next steven avery case. So, while there are a lot of people who don't get the limelight, the problem as a whole is getting a lot of attention and a lot of people are demanding a healthier system. Which, in and of itself, will be helpful for future trials/cases/etc.

eta: or maybe I'm too optimistic?

@.twist.: I have to agree that it's pretty crazy that this was all documented as it was. But it also makes me feel sad for those people who deal with the same thing but nobody was filming their fight/struggles so they go unnoticed and unspoken for.

The thought that anyone could believe that only guilty people go to prison or jail just boggles my mind. Maybe I am jaded or maybe I have witnessed laws, courts, the judicial system, attorneys in action but I can assure you I do not trust the legal system.

@MoonMoon: as far as the awakening in this country I fully suspect that has a lot to do with technology and the media.

As stated above the idea that nothing bad would happen to an innocent person in our system is ludicrous to me, but that is just my opinion.

@Ajsmommy: I think there's a great awakening in this country in the last year or two that cops and the justice system are imperfect and biased and we need more knowledge and oversight. And to answer your question, I think plenty of people think that only guilty people go to prison, nothing bad would ever happen to an innocent person, that LE would never be in the wrong, and that everything is black and white. Unfortunately.

@Ajsmommy: I see this type of comment come up a lot for certain media sensations. I think a big thing is that it's at our finger tips. Of course this stuff happens on a regular basis. How many of those things are documented, the way this has been?

I don't think anyone [edit:here] doubts that there is corruption in the system, but we don't always hear about it, or how bad it is, on a regular basis, or even in this manner.

I do agree with moonmoon that there probably ARE people out there who think the system is totally just.

I am only on episode 2 and I haven't seen Brendan yet however I am curious as to why everyone is sooooo into this. I mean do people think that all the people in jail/prison are guilty? Like not even one guilty person got off? So in turn why is it so far fetched that there would be some innocent people who get convicted? And the concept of corrupt police officers/attorneys/judges is everywhere.. I mean do people really think it only happens in Hollywood movies?

We are on episode 5 right now...

I wondered if I would get DH into it...as a criminal defense attorney he can sometimes get "bored" with watching shows about what he does all day. And then sometimes he just gets annoyed with how other attorney's present something. But he is totally into it now.

We are only 5 episodes in (I think) but DH is just baffled and I am just crushed by everything with poor Brendan. Its just so sad. He said he had told his dad to watch it - his dad is a 35+ year criminal defense atty who is extremely involved in the "ethics" side of legal representation. After some of what we have seen he told his dad he better not watch it for fear his head would explode.

BTW - he told me last night that in Wisc (right? not Minn?) you dont take a bar exam...just graduate law school and can practice. Crazy!
