I have no issues with letting repair people/trades people in my home when I am alone. I first heard about it Monday because the victim was a fellow pediatric resident with one of my best friends. It is such a disgusting, disturbing story. I do my due diligence when having people in our home (ref checks, proper ID). I feel very comfortable having proper contractors working in and outside of our house. While it could be nerve wracking to grant these individuals access to your home, think about how uncomfortable it is for them. They’re going into a stranger’s domain where the homeowner has the upper hand. How many pizza boy murders have we heard of? There are some seriously crazy people out there.</p> <p>I think it comes down to research and knowing the individuals that you’re hiring. My family members swear by Angies List. They’ve hired numerous trustworthy service workers and never had a single issue. In college I was alone in my dorm over the summer for a short time and was assaulted by a contractor, but the police convinced me to drop my case. (They caught the guy a few years later when he was breaking into women's apartments and assaulting them.) And a few months ago, a contractor we had working on our windows blew up yelling at me when he couldn't remember how much he was supposed to be paid. He was so irrational that he didn't hear me offering a check for any amount as long as he would leave. In that moment I was actually scared he would kick my dog, and don't even know what I'd have done if I had a LO around.</p> <p>So...that's it. If DH can't be there I'm not letting contractors in. </p>
