What if you just left everyone until the baby was 3 or 4 months and you were over the newborn hump? Just have the newborn sleep in a RNP or a PNP until then.

I would not buy another crib. Get your oldest a bed for sure. Maybe even invest in a day bed. Then you have a trundle for baby #2 when she is older.

I also wouldn't buy a new crib. Are you using a bassinet or PNP or something for DD3 for the first bit? That gives you a bit of extra time to leave the older girls as-is, if you want.

@avivoca: 27 months (so about 3 months shy of 2.5).she's....umm...adventurous, to put it nicely. 😜But like your LO, I suspect she COULD climb out of a crib if she felt like it, so maybe her bed behavior will surprise me!

@PinkElephant: How old is DD2? H is 2.5 and we don't have any problems with her in a big girl bed. She stays in it and waits for us to come get her. She never climbed out of the crib (though she could, she showed me a couple of weeks before we made the transition).

@avivoca: @oliviaoblivia: I know you guys are right  ,

I just SO don't know if I want DD2 out of a crib if I can avoid it - I will have to have DH look harder at reinstalling the side (we did some DIY with L-brackets to turn it into a daybed - it wasn't meant to be a convertible crib.

As far as the sheets, I suppose I can just break out my sewing machine and alter some twin sheets from a non-IKEA source (a full size twin bed is not going to fit in the space between a weird bump out in the wall and the radiator and would be a space-hog in the bedroom - a no-go if we need the three girls to share for a year or 18 months).

I'd put your oldest in a regular bed.
When my third arrived my three year old was in a daybed, my one year old was in a crib in the nursery and the baby was in a cosleeper next to my bed.
Six months later things have changed up a bit.
DD1 is in a twin, DD2 is in also in a twin in the same room. It's a disassembled bunk so hers has railings most of the way around. DD3 is in the crib in the nursery.

I think in the near future your oldest will need/want to be in a real bed so you should bite the bullet. Another crib will be redundant shortly.

I don't know if the IKEA bed is a pain, but I would go ahead and get it for your older daughter, move the second into the converted bed, and have your third sleep in the crib. At 5/6, I can't see a child wanting to sleep in a converted crib and she may have a huge growth spurt.

Like you, we aren't planning to move to the burbs for a couple of years and our girls will be sharing a room, so we got DD1 a new twin bed/mattress and DD2 will be using the crib until then. We never converted the crib to a toddler bed though so all we need to do is raise the mattress. If we end up staying here long-term, we'll have to figure something else out (like give up our office) because I don't really want to do bunks.

Debating what to do about beds for our two (soon to be three) daughters - basically, I need to buy a larger toddler bed or a third crib, and I'm not sure which is the better plan. Currently, this is our sleep set up:

DD1 - Crib converted to a toddler bed/daybed. It was broken and repaired while we were sanding it, so it will not convert back to a crib easily - it's pretty much stuck in daybed position.

DD2 - Crib on the lowest setting. Can convert to a toddler bed/daybed later.

Both girls are in one large room; the baby will sleep in a mini-room/alcove off of our room probably for her first year (maybe longer) - it accommodates a standard size crib.

My options at this point are to move DD1 to an IKEA Kritter bed (I have the frame, but will need to buy the mattress & new linens), give DD2 the bed DD1 currently sleeps in (which we may or may not be able to turn back into a crib), and give DD2's crib, on which the height can be changed, to DD3.....OR I can just buy a new convertible crib for the baby. I'm leaning towards the latter option because everyone is happy in their current bed, and eventually I think I'll have all three girls in one giant bedroom (probably until the youngest is 2 or maybe even 3) due to not being ready to move to the suburbs just yet, so I'm all about saving the space.

So basically I am curious to know:

(a) Is the IKEA toddler bed a pain (in the sense that you are bound to either IKEA sheets/mattress or custom sheets)?

(b) Is it ridiculous to expect a (small for her age) child to sleep in a crib converted to a toddler bed until she's 5 or 6? The IKEA bed would give her an extra 9 inches, but I'm not really sure she needs it!

Thanks for any thoughts!
