Just have to chime in on the Expecting Better love - this was the best book for me to read in the first tri, really helped me keep a good perspective!

I've had 1-2 cups of coffee/day throughout pregnancy. Half-caff when I feel like it.

@NovBaby1112: seriously, that was the best thing for my pregnancy. I loved that book. I would have been a googling stress care if I did not read it. Now that I am 30 weeks along I'm re reading it. I read it at 10 weeks the first time.

@Little Misters Mom: Glad to hear someone else chiming in with the data from Expecting Better! That book has been a godsend for me.

I aim for 200 mg per day but don't beat myself up if I need to go up to 300 mg. If I'm not caffeinated I can't do my job well and if I can't do my job well I can't provide for my baby! I usually go for lattes since the amount of caffeine in espresso shots is much more consistent across establishments, and I love my Coke Zero.

It really gets my hackles up when people say things like "it wasn't worth the risk" or "I just wanted to be safe" - there's no real evidence that it's particularly risky or unsafe, especially once the risk of miscarriage falls after the first tri, and those kinds of statements really strike me as sanctimonious. You decided it wasn't the right choice for you...no need to bring an implicit value judgement of anyone else's decisions into it.

I completely quit coffee when we started trying. It was miserable at first, because I was used to having a few cups a day, but now the smell of it makes me queasy.

That said, my doctor said a cup of coffee a day was fine. I just want to be extra safe.

Also, if you are drinking coffee, remember that some other things (like chocolate) can have caffeine, so that counts towards your caffeine limit too.

I cut down to one cup a day and an occasional coke. Now that I am in my third trimester I'm going back for a second or even a third cup. Plain black coffee is my jam. I had morning sickness but coffee always sounded good.

I had around 2 cups a day unless I was feeling sick. I also drank caffeine in tea and soda (fountain cokes were the only thing that helped my tummy) and I'm sure I went over the recommended amounts plenty of times. I never worried about it and have a healthy 6.5 month old.

Emily Oster breaks down the actual evidence and statistical risks in "Expecting Better." In a nut shell, correlation is not causation. Women who experience morning sickness tend to have fewer m/c, women who experience morning sickness tend to not want/be able to drink coffee. Therefore in raw data, less coffee appear to equal fewer m/c. But once you control for severity of morning sickness, it's unclear if there is any risk whatsoever remaining, and if there is, it's extremely extremely low.

I was told 100 mg/1 cup a day with both pregnancies.

I didn't drink any during the first trimester with DS and had usually a cup a day the rest of the pregnancy.

Right now, I'm avoiding as much as I can but will indulge in half a cup/cup of coffee when I need it, i try to take it decaf if I can. I'll probably have a cup/day once I'm out of the first trimester.

I didn't drink coffee until my 3rd tri with my first. It just wasn't good and made me sick. Now I usually have 1 to 2 cups. Sometimes I just really need something to help me not pass the out at 4pm. I never not liked it this time around. I only drink water or caffeine free herbal teas so I don't really feel the need to stop myself if I really really need a boost that food or exercise won't give and I don't have time for a nap.

I had always been told 200mg...haven't seen the 100 mg rec. I had minimal caffeine during the first tri, but since I started the second tri, I've had 1-2 cups of half caf or 1 cup of regular (via Keurig), so ~60-80mg. Sometimes I will also have a can of coke zero though as well, so I'm sure there are days when I go over 100. never over 200 though. With my first, I really didn't have any, but I need it now!
