@AggieDaze: I am sorry I only saw your reply just now. We're in Europe so carseats are different. So I am of no help. 😕

@Purpledaisy: I didn't have a certain age. Back when he was an infant, I probably said I just wanted to make it until 2. But now, I wonder if keeping rear facing as long as possible is the safest thing to do. It's one of those situations where if I turned him, and nothing ever happened, I wouldn't think twice. But, if I turned him and something happened, I'd feel guilty forever. That said, there are so many things that you could apply that logic to and I know I can't live that way!

@regberadaisy: That's what I was thinking.... we've gotten 2 years out of the Marathons with LO1. And, I'd expect we could get another 1-2 years with it after LO2 transitions out of his infant seat.

@Foodnerd81: We should be able to. When I bought the marathon, I had an altima but now I have a toyota highlander. The second row shifts back and we have plenty of room between the driver headrest and the marathon now.

@Pumuckl: Which seat did you end up getting? I'm kinda wondering if my long-torso'd toddler is going to have a difficult time no matter what.

It's annoying as I did the research 2 years ago when we bought the marathon, but I did have a smaller car then so that limited us a bit. I've always expected him to be tall.

For me, the change is risk of injury from RF to FF wouldn't justify getting a new seat. From a statistical view, there is a fairly low chance of injury in either situation (although that doesn't tell me anything about my particular child and driving situation), and I would prefer not to spend the extra money, not to consume more baby stuff, and to make my life easier getting the kid into the car. (I plan to switch my two-year-old to FF as soon as I get around to taking out the seat and vacuuming the car. )

But you may do the risk-benefit analysis differently :)

Can you comfortably fit his seat RF and the infant seat and still have enough space for the driver to be comfortable?

We have a nextfit because it was important to me to RF past 2. But baby 2 is due when my toddler is almost 2.5 and it's much more comfortable for the driver to not have an RF seat behind him so we will turn her right before the baby is born. I also think it will be easier for her to get into the seat on her own (she is a climber but hasn't totally mastered getting into a RF seat by herself).

So I say, unless you are planning to rf a lot longer, I would just stick with what you have.

I think since you are due any day now then I would just buy a new car seat for him. RF or FF is completely up to you guys.

I think it's really up to you whether you feel comfortable turning him or not. We have the NextFit and when our LO's legs got really long around 2.5 I struggled to get in to the strap and really pull it tight enough. So even though technically she could have rear faced longer, I felt more comfortable turning her. I will say though, I wouldn't recommend doing RF in one car and FF in another. I think if he FF's in one car he'll likely fight RF'ing.

We were faced with the same dilemma a couple of months ago and decided to get a new RF seat. We purposely decided on the one with the highest height restriction then though.

I think it just depends on if rear facing for longer is that important to you or not. It's a tough call. Do you have a certain age that you were trying to get to with rear facing? For example, if you were planning on switching at 3 I would say maybe just go ahead and flip it. If you were aiming for much longer than that I would be more likely to lean towards buying new ones.

LO1 is nearly 2.5 and averages around 32 lbs. We have two britax marathon 70 g3s currently rear facing in each of our cars, but I definitely think he is about 1 inch from the top of the shell. From what I understand, the marathon's directions say to turn forward facing once your child reaches 1 inch from shell (unlike the chicco nextfit or graco 4 ever which is 1 inch from the top of the extendable headrest).

So, would you buy a new car seat (I'm thinking the chicco nextfit) in order to extend rear facing a tad longer?

The nextfit also has the benefit of more side impact protection (which will be helpful forward facing as well). I am due with LO2 any day so I'm sure the Britax marathons would get good use from him as well once he outgrows the infant seat, and they've been used by LO1 for almost 2 years since we switched him from an infant seat early.
