I bought the first years carseat based on it's very high safety rating. It was rated at the top and was inexpensive, but it is HEAVY. We also have the first years convertible.

I was super bummed when the uppababy Mesa wasn't available in Canada for my LO but it was a blessing in disguise because I LOVE my keyfit magic!

There's some more information in the comments, but like @mae: said, they haven't disclosed all the specific criteria that makes something basic, better, best. Hopefully that information will be public soon.

@T.H.O.U.: I was wondering if that was the difference between the Graco 30 ("best") and the Graco 35 ("better") which we got too... but I can't find where it actually discusses why something got rated the way it did.

I wanted the UB Mesa sooo badly but it wasn't going to be out in time for my LO's arrival. We got the Mico instead (off No Better Deal for 1/3 the price of the Mesa). Guess it worked out for the best!

Interesting! We had an orbit baby... when I read the comments... the reason it got basic was because there were signs of more head trauma than other car seats. Maybe we will use something different if we have another baby.

Thanks for sharing.

The one issue I have with this (if I am reading it correctly) is that it kinda mixes personal preference with safety. For example, our Chaperone fell to "better" instead of "best" the B Safe got. I assume the major difference (because one of the major differences in the seat) is the weight of the car seat. Yes obviously you don't want to lug around extra weight, but that shouldn't factor into how "safe" the seat is

@Cole: I was really surprised to see some pricier seats, the orbit baby and the maxi cosi prezi, in the basic category.

That's great, thank you for sharing! I can't wait to see what they come out with for the convertibles. I was sort of surprised to see the Mesa just get a "better" rating, that thing is a behemoth and I would have assumed it would rank higher. I am curious if there will be more surprises in the convertibles category.

Just wanted to throw this out there for those researching infant seats. Consumer reports has come out with a new test method for infant car seats and has put up a list of the how some of the top selling seats ranked.

http://carseatblog.com/26915/the-safest-infant-carseats-new-crash-protection-ratings-and-methods-from-consumer-reports/

I'm interested to see convertible seats tested next!
