I bought a second one, but only because my toddler (27m) is still using his. I think I would have bought a new one anyway though.

Thanks everybody for their responses! Made me feel better around my original plan to save 100 bucks.

My parents happen to have a good, waterproof crib mattress that's only been used when my son sleeps there (probably less than once a month in the past 1.5 years). Thinking we'll give the new baby that one, and transition LO1's slightly more used crib mattress to the grandparents house (especially since I don't foresee LO2 sleeping there until he's older than 6 months anyway).

Nope - waterproof mattress here, plus I always use a waterproof cover on it. There's no way any liquid could have permeated into the mattress material itself. I'm usually a stickler for safety issues but in this case I think it's fearmongering.

Nope...it's waterproof and high quality. My first slept on it until 34 months! And then the baby has been on it since (he was around 5 months when he started sleeping in the crib). And I won't get another for the third, either.

I don't have two yet, but we are using a crib and mattress that was given to us by my SIL. They used one of their cribs for two kids and this one for one. It was only used for 8 months Before being given to us though.

If it had been older I maybe would have considered it but this one was pretty much brand new

I'd say no... DD is 10 mo and barely slept in her crib anyway. And even if we have #2 when she's still in the crib (assuming we move her there), then #2 will take DD's place and cosleep with us first.

Nope, it's got a built in waterproof cover and we always used a waterproof sheet under the crib sheet. I don't understand the SIDS aspect either in this case.

No but in all honesty LO1 really only napped in the crib so I considered the risk pretty low.

We'll be getting a new mattress for LO #2 when he gets the crib. LO #1 has used the crib since he was a baby. At 3+ years old, the mattress has seen better days.

We are reusing our toddlers crb and mattress. She sleeps in a queen bed now.

While SIDS is scary and devastating, it happens to only 40% of 1% of every 1000 children. The best thing you can do is have baby on their back in a bare crib in the parents room (not alone in a nursery) and not smoke or drink or do drugs while cosleeping. Breastfeeding and frequent paci use with no swaddling helps too.

We plan to use the same mattress but flip it back to the infant side. DD will be 2.5 when LO#2 arrives in March...we are moving her into her toddler bed (with a new cheaper mattress) in a few months.

No, same crib and mattress. that being said our oldest started to crawl out of bed around 16 months, so we switched her to a big girl bed pretty early (scared of falling) so she was only on the crib mattress for 16 months and she was a small girl, not even hitting 20 pounds while sleeping on it.

@MrsB2012: Yep. Mine are 21 months apart and we weren't ready to move the older from his crib (which turns into a toddler bed anyway), so we got a new crib and new mattress because of that.

I am getting a new one. A lot of it because of SIDS risk reduction, and partially because it's been stored in our basement and that makes it seem icky to me.

I'm not planning on it. Maybe I'll flip it over- both sides are the same firmness? C will be almost 2.5 when the new baby is born but the baby won't go into the crib right away. I don't really understand the risks, to be honest.

I think I've read or heard somewhere that safety experts recommend getting a new crib mattress for each baby in order to minimize SIDS risk.

Not sure if it matters, but my son is almost 2.5 and is 32 lbs. His crib mattress has gotten a lot of use, but has never gotten wet.
