Thanks to everyone for the condolences.

@Synchronicity: @Mrs.KMM: Yes, this is exactly how my husband feels. He is very much a dog lover and really feels the absence of a dog so acutely right now. I am much more a dog "liker" but even I admit our home feels so quiet and empty (and I have to clean up food I drop all by myself now!)

Thank you all for the positive stories. We are planning to start looking for the right new dog for our family in a few weeks once DH goes on a short business trip. I'm feeling more positive that having around six months to acclimate the dog to our family, especially if we get an adult dog, will be OK and not add too much more chaos than we are already used to!

Personally, I wouldn't get another dog before having all my kids. We have jealousy issues with ours, that I don't think would of happened if the kids were here before the dog.

i think because you already had a dog and know the responsibilities as well as already having a kiddo, i would lean toward getting another dog, than not. you still have time to transition and i would just be clear with DH about the parameters for getting a new dog (aka: he takes on a bulk of care/training now!)

We adopted a two-year old mutt right around the end of the first trimester. It was important to us that our LO grow up in a house with a dog, and the timing was good for us in terms of slower times at work (so we'd have more time to acclimate him). When we talked it over, it seemed better to have six months with the dog before LO arrives than to try to integrate a dog into the family with a baby or toddler. LO isn't here yet, but so far, so good!

We found out I was pregnant in the morning, and that afternoon we adopted a puppy. We had no issues when we brought home DS. Our puppy was, and still is, very sweet and calm

@Synchronicity: I was just going to say this! When we lose our dog, we will get a new one really quickly. Clearly nothing will replace her but our house doesn't feel like home without a canine in our lives!

I think since you are planning to not get a puppy and this is your second LO so you know more of what to expect with the newborn stage, you'd be totally fine to get a dog now.

We got a retriever puppy when I was 6 months pregnant with DD2. I honestly think puppies are more work than babies! That being said, it is totally doable. Especially if you aren't talking about getting a puppy.

What has worked out well for us, is DH has the primary responsibility for the puppy so it wasn't that much more work for me. (It was amazing to be able to stay in bed when the puppy had to go out multiple times at night. Realized what it must be like for DH to not have to get up for the MOTN feedings!)

I say go for it!

For the people saying it's too soon to be "replacing" the dog, it really isn't about that at all. Some people just don't feel at home if there isn't a dog in the house... I happen to be one of them! I would absolutely consider adopting an adult dog, from a reputable rescue who will do a great job matching your family with one of their pups. Sorry for your loss :(

I think now would be better than later considering your husband really wants a new dog. The longer you have with the new dog before your new LO comes along, the better. I would imagine getting a dog while you were pregnant would be MUCH better than getting a new dog in the first year of future LO's life.

We are very much dog people and I wouldn't hesitate getting a new dog (not a puppy) while I was pregnant. We have two dogs now, and if the cardinals win the world series, we are getting another. (I'm 18 weeks now).

I think you would be fine getting a new dog now. I mean you're only 11 weeks, so you have plenty of time before your next LO comes along. Plus you mentioned it wouldn't be a puppy, so the transition will be so much easier with an adult dog! I say go for it!

I probably wouldn't do it on purpose but we got a puppy and then found out I was pregnant exactly a month later. It was hard because I was very consumed with what was going on with me and later with making baby plans so I wasn't as patient as I could have been. My husband did most of the work.

I am happy the dog is part of our family and my son loves her. I think if your husband feels really strongly and you guys know what you're getting into since you've had a child and dog before, it will probably be ok.

I got an English Bulldog puppy when LO was 16-17 months old so we've had her for about 6 months now, and honestly, she isn't horrible. ;).

I think it reeeeally depends on the breed--Bulldogs don't require much exercise at ALL, and basicay don't bark, so that's been super nice. There's no way I could have done it with a retriever or something. We were kind of like you where it was a "now or never" kind of thing. I say do your research first and go for it, realizing that there will probably be a few shitty times. :)

I'm so sorry for your loss :(

I haven't gotten a new dog while pregnant, but I have gotten two puppies (a few months apart) shortly after getting married, moving to a new city and starting grad school with a hubby that travels all the time for work :) It was busy, but we managed and I can't imagine not having all of their doggie love in our lives. Six months is a long time for a dog to settle into a new home (especially an adult dog) so I think your dog will be very well adjusted by the time baby arrives. As long as you husband is on board with taking the lead on training, exercise, etc - which it sounds like he very much is - I say go for it. Dogs are the best companions and your little one will have a buddy to grow up with :)

I can understand where your husband is coming from. My younger is just a year and BIL just adopted a puppy with his Gf. Their puppy is very sweet and pretty well behaved. But she is teething and very nippy, not to mention very hyper and jumping all over the place. We love having her over but we definitely can't let DD2 roam free with the puppy lose. We have a older dog and both our girls are used to dogs but DD2 cries when the puppy goes to lick her. Maybe because she's too forceful about it?

Regardless, I think it will be very hard to handle a newborn / infant while properly training a puppy. IF you think you can find the right one to adopt within the next month then that's probably the only window I would consider.

I would really really really recommend against getting a new dog right now. Having a puppy (or even an older dog who is new to you) and a newborn at the same time sounds like a nightmare to me.

Getting a new dog is not going to make losing the old one any easier. I think with a little time and space your husband will see that he really can't replace the dog he lost.

Have any of you gotten a new dog while pregnant? I'm 11w with our second LO and we had to put down our family dog Tuesday. DH is devastated but is already talking about getting a new dog.

I'm leery of the chaos and uncertainty surrounding introducing a new dog to our family and training the new dog when we are already only six months away from another period of chaos and adjustment. But DH is devastated and can't imagine waiting a long time (I'd want to wait at least a year so we can get more into a routine with 2 kids). I'd love to hear your experiences, positive or negative, so we can figure out what would make sense for our family.

ETA, I would definitely not consider a puppy. DH and I both work FT out of the home and cannot devote time to housebreaking and training a puppy and their energy level.
