We have a family of 6 (soon to be 7) and can fit most everything in our counter depth fridge, BUT we also have a beverage fridge, a garage fridge, and a huge garage freezer. So.

Things that were necessary for me when we bought our fridge--a bottom drawer freezer (SO much better than the side by side fridge and freezer) with an ice maker, a water dispenser on the inside, and a clean flat front. We ended up with a kitchenaid and have no complaints!

In retrospect we didn't need the water dispenser in the fridge--we also have a water filtration system with it's own dispenser on our sink and that's all that gets used!

One note about buying appliances--if you get them from Costco, Costco will automatically extend the manufacturer's warranty from one to two years. And if you pay for it with the Costco credit card, they extend the warranty to 4 years. We got the credit card specifically to put all of our appliances on. When we were looking at appliance stores, the extended warranties would have cost us over $1k.

DO NOT BUY LG!!!!!!

If I could scream that at everyone, I would until I was blue in the face. I can't tell you how many problems we have had with ours and sadly, it was the only one that would fit. LG has a class action lawsuit against them based on how crappy their fridges are. Ours crapped out after two years. They repaired it. Two years later, it needed a whole new compressor. Thankfully, due to the lawsuit, they covered that. And we have so many issues with the ice maker.

I get the appeal of counter depth but the lack of space makes it so impractical. My parents have one and it's just the 2 of them but I swear they can't fit much in that fridge or freezer. They have a giant full size chest fridge and freezer in their basement and we're constantly running up and down the stairs to get all of the things they can't fit in their fridge. It's basically for some condiments and milk. I guess we get our exercise that way. :)

Our old Samsung fridge lasted for at least 12 years, but we couldn't bring it with us during our move last summer. We loved it though and definitely prefer it to the one our house came with. We plan on renovating the kitchen in the next year or 2 (kind of waiting/hoping that supply chain struggles die down) and I've been eyeing the same one as @SteelerGirl and @Miss Ariel!

That said - I do not care for the counter-depth fridge! I wish I could fit a full depth in our new space, but it just won't work. I suppose it forces you to be a bit more thoughtful with food storage but I run out of room CONSTANTLY!

I had a Samsung that lasted 6 years. Never again will I buy a Samsung appliance. I ended up with a Bosch counter depth and love it. The shelves are more sleek without the usual frame and actually seems deeper than other counter depth. The freezer has 3 drawers so it's easier to organize. And the build just feels so solid. I never thought I'd describe a fridge as sexy, but it's one sexy fridge and love at first sight. Lol. Blew the budget by like a grand and well worth it.

Great tips above!

I concur about avoiding samsung. (sorry steeler girl!I wish you the best of luck with yours!) My ice machine has pretty much never worked. No one is able to fix it. I hate to replace it because of this but most likely will be doing so soon. I will be purchasing my next one from costco. I want bottom freezer and french doors on top. Bottom freezer will work only because we have another freezer in the garage. Good luck!

We recently purchased this Samsung one and I absolutely love it.

We've had it about two months, so no experience on longevity. But I love the features! I love the clean look of the doors without a dispenser. The autofill pitcher is amazing for filling water bottles quickly (something we do multiple times a day with kids). I love the size and shape of the ice. I love the flexibility of having one whole section either fridge or freezer.

I could only fit a 30'' fridge so there was exactly 3 models I could choose. I did not pick Samsung because I do not like the ice dispenser location (take off too much room inside the fridge). It is more pleasing to not have water/ice dispenser but we wanted one. (I do not want a Keurig in my fridge, like GE thinks we all need)
I didn't buy counter depth because one side of my fridge is a wall. 1) it does not bother me as much that it's not counter depth 2) it means I can't fully open one of the door (about 90deg only).
Apart from that, look at the configuration of the bins. All I can say... are fridges are not as reliable as they used to be. I thought all new fridges came with door alarms... if not, it's easy to add so to me, it's not the most important features. I like that my fridge (LG) has a retractable shelf(half way in) so I can put taller stuff in the fridge. I prefer french doors to side by side because you have more width in the fridge to put pans and etc.

Samsung is known for having issues. I have one that has been fine for 7 years, but I feel like ever since we bought ours we've heard lots of horror stories of people with Samsungs, so possibly avoid Samsung.

The bottom freezer/french door is fantastic and feels so much more spacious than a side by side imo. The other thing I really love about ours is that it is a closed system in the back, so no coils to dust or worries about things clogging up or the coils getting too close to the wall. We also chose one without an ice/water dispenser for aesthetic reasons and because we never use enough ice that we need more than what our ice trays hold without knowing in advance (ie we're having a party).

Would love to hear anyone’s thoughts on brands, good features, etc related to buying a new fridge. #1 feature for me is door alarm - as toddler is learning to open the door to put her milk inside. Thinking freezer on bottom… but torn on which brand… especially with current shortages. Thanks in advance for any advice!
