@2PeasinaPod: This is the recipe I use for the Mexican "lasagna" http://batterlicker.com/2011/05/mexican-tortilla-lasagna-with-chorizo-kale-and-beans/ -- I replace the tomato-chile sauce with diced tomatoes and replace the chorizo with ground beef if people don't like spicy (I usually ask especially with BF moms). I hadn't heard about the tomato sauce so thanks for the heads up! I also have been wanting to try this lasagna recipe (and it's bechemal so no tomato) http://batterlicker.com/2010/11/butternut-squash-and-basil-bechamel-lasagna/

@MamaMoose: I've never made a pot pie, but that sounds like a popular choice!

@aprk: Ooh cut of fruit is a great idea! I wouldn't have thought of that!

@blackbird: Good idea about dessert! People are probably bringing over meals, but I could make it a full dinner if I brought some carrot cupcakes or something like that.

@luckypenny: Love this idea! I'll have to bring her breakfast on another occasion and do this!

@TurtleDoves: Yes! I've done tupperware once or twice but realized how inconvenient it was for people. Now I just do those disposable tinfoil bakers.

@PurplePeony: Yum! That looks like the recipe I've been wanting to try (she's not a mushroom fan so I'll have to adapt). Thanks for sharing!

Thanks everyone for your fabulous ideas! I'm going to have to take her a few meals!!!

If you want to do lasagna but don't want to use tomatoes, this recipe is really good: http://www.thekitchn.com/recipe-chard-mushroom-lasagna-137482. I would imagine almond milk would sub in just fine for the milk in the béchamel sauce if your friend is avoiding dairy. I'm planning to make and freeze a couple of these prior to my due date!

Also, I totally agree with using disposable bakeware.

@Mrs. Jump Rope: THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!

Whatever you bring, bring it in a disposable tin.
I had so many people bring me food in porcelain or ceramic or glass dishes, and then i'd have to wash them. Washing them was annoying because the pasta or whatever it was in them , was sticky because it took me a few days to eat it all. And of course, I wouldn't risk putting someone's dish in a dishwasher because it might get scratched.
And then, super annoying: they'd call like a few days alter and ask if I was done with the dish. They'd visit again to pick up the dish. It was just so much more annoying than it was helpful.

Hoemade soup, I easily heated it up in a bowl for lunch quick and muffins, they were great when I was hungry when breastfeeding and I could grab one quick!

Dinners: casseroles that froze well because we got a ton of food! And my cousin was awesome and had a roast crockpot meal ready, all I had to do was throw every in when we wanted it and DH got a nice hearty meal (fall baby.) Roast, veggies cut up, and what not! She sent a loaf of homemade bread to eat with it, it was incredible.

I would vote for the lasagna! I also BF with no issues about the sauce, so I suppose you can ask your friend?...
My husband travels for work all through the fall- he left for a 2 week trip when my LO was 4 weeks old... and I had already stocked up on Halloween candy. Big mistake! I ate mini chocolate bars all day until my brother in law brought me a veggie lasagna. It saved my sanity! I cut off a piece that I could microwave and I think I ate it for at least 2 meals a day until it was gone.
Although if he had brought me a chicken pot pie, that would have been good too! :) Or shepard's pie. Yum! Something you can heat up in the microwave and eat a smallish piece at a time.ANd maybe with at least one veggie- to be a little healthy.

I always make a Chicken Pot Pie (I use betty crocker's recipe that's an actual pie, not like that biscuit topping). It's delicious, a little different from what most people bring, it's easy to heat/reheat at any time, and you can put it in a disposable pie plate so the new parents don't have to worry about getting anything back to you. It's also great because it's something that's really easy to make a double batch of so I make one for my family to eat too.

Nothing with tomato sauce! I know lasagna is such an easy thing to make, but tomato sauce made my BF baby incredibly gassy and colicky.

My vote is grilled chicken, rice and veggies. Or a balsamic chicken stir fry with carrots and snow peas (much less gassy veggies).

I want to bring something over to a friend who just had a baby. I usually do mac n cheese or a Mexican lasagna/casserole and a salad. But I want to mix it up this time. New moms--what would you like to receive? Other ladies-- what do you usually bring over?
