You can still buy Photoshop Elements, but I 'm not sure if it would do everything you need - http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop-elements/buying-guide.html?promoid=WXYGJ4XB&mv=other

I'm pretty sure you can still buy LR6 without a subscription.

@Littlebit7: Yeah, it sucks. I tried to find an older version that I could get without a subscription, but they are all soooooo expensive now. Bummed I didn't just buy Photoshop when I had the chance before all this!

@Adira: I know I totally agree. They get you in a chokehold because why would you ever stop subscribing once you start??? Its so annoying. I loved aperture but apple cut support for that so I had to jump ship to LR/PS

@Littlebit7: Not having access to the Develop module makes Lightroom all but useless to me. There are other free programs that can convert your raw photos to DNG and I can organize them myself in Windows Explorer. It just sucks they are charging so much for these functions when it didn't used to be that way. :(

I just signed up for the Adobe Creative Cloud Photography Plan. It isn't inexpensive and I don't like that you have to pay for them in perpetuity if you want 100% of the features HOWEVER
if you stop paying the subscription fee its not like Lightroom/photoshop just implodes and ceases to function. You will still be able to use lightroom for managing all of your photos and you will still be able to import and export, however you won't have access to the develop and map modules. To buy photoshop CS6 right now outright is $650. Lightroom is $150. Photoshop is VERY intense. I'm migrating over from Aperture for Mac and I've found Lightroom does all that I ask of it: managing my library plus pretty much all the editing I care to do.

From Adobe:
"You'll still have access to all your photos on your local hard drive through Lightroom for the desktop. You can continue to import and organize photos as well as output your edited photos through Export, Publish, Print, Web, or Slideshow. Access to the Develop & Map modules and Lightroom for mobile are not available after your membership ends."

@Adira: I know! They've got to know not everyone uses the programs regularly. :/

@bluestriped bee: Ha for someone that has no clue, I know I wouldn't need the latest and greatest. I just wanted something to practice learning to use.

@Boogs: DH is still using his. The newest technology might not be there but it works fine for him.

I would look into what the newest version has compared to older versions. When I looked a year or two years ago, the new features weren't worth it to us to upgrade. Plus, we might have forgotten about it. I think we would only upgrade now if something went wrong and couldn't get the current software to work.

Yeah, I was thinking of buying photoshop recently too because I have an old version of lightroom that I really like, but I wanted something more. Subscriptions suck. There's no way I'd get my money's worth out of them, so now I'm stuck. :bummed:

@bluestriped bee: Our question/worry is will software still work? Or will it not work at some point because of ever changing/updating technology?

@Boogs: Yeah, DH bought the software about 2 years ago. I think I heard after that point you had to pay for a subscription service. He is still using that program and we haven't paid into the subscription service yet.

ETA: You might look into getting an older software/version. You should/might still be able to use it. I know I've purchased older Microsoft Office because I didn't want to pay full price for a newest version. To me, the last older version was good enough for me.

Am I understanding correctly that for these programs the only way to use them would be to pay a monthly subscription now? I have no clue how to use them, but DH was thinking of buying me the programs to just play around with on occasion and discovered this. Kinda bummed, because for the way I would use them I wouldn't get my money's worth. Does anyone know anything about this or if you can still buy just the programs somehow without a prescription?
